Frist of all, great game. Keep up the good work.
I did a search for this and it came back with nothing. My Bounty Hunter comes accross about 2 pirates every single space he moves and it is starting to get annoying. His stealth is around 22. I thought this was supposed to limit encounters? Is there a speciffic reason these assholes keep coming after me? Even in friendly Clan space i get assaulted by them and was just wondering if anyone had some ideas to reduce all this hassle. Thanks.
Oh, and yes i have trade permits with all the friendly factions.

How many turns has the Captain existed?
22 Stealth is good for a few thousand ... my 10,000 turn characters are looking to have around 50

Some pirates ought to be out of control. They're pirates. You can attack friendly merchant ships, why can't they? Maybe your Negotiation skill and reputation can negate their bad report when you scuttle their hull.

I am looking at pirates and here is how they work
mRankModel.Permit != 1 mRankModel.Rank < 6 mCharacterModel.Turn > 25 + mCharacterModel.GameDifficult * 10) { mShipModel.CurrentHold() > mHostileShip.CurrentHold() XB { mShipModel.Hold_Artifacts > 0 XOR mShipModel.Hold_Weapons > 0 XOR mShipModel.Hold_Electronics > 0 }
So it looks like they respect Rank, but only above Rank 6, and Independent Pirates Fear Nothing.

So far in my current game, the pirates of factions friendly to me leave me alone. I initiate battle stations and retreat. Unlike the enemy pirates, they don't seem to try to hit me. With this current game I have done my best to keep my ship in shape.
One previous game, a faction pirate did attack my ship, but it was limping away from a recent battle and was rather torn up.
Do pirates "smell blood in the water"?

Yes, pirates do have some % of being hostile based on reputation and ship vs. ship scoring.

"Set the reactors to burn a little dirty and make the ship list a little to the left. I want to attract some pirates in this sector."
If they smell blood, I want a chum bucket upgrade.

LOL ... yes, there seems to be an over-population of pirates in the waters, and it is our job to cull the number to a more manageable level. I for one would LOVE the chum bucket upgrade. Or a "Distressed merchant" beacon for that matter I definitely get pirates coming at me, even if I have a rank higher than 6, but because I value my rank and trade permit, I have to turn tail and scamper off.

In which case, player captains best be careful they don't become pirate flagged. Bounty Hunters ought to become more aggressive to collect more pirate ears. (With the number of ears my captains lose, crew members will be checking the couch cushions for spare change!)

I like the idea of pirates, smuglers, and outlaws in general being fair game no matter the clan affiliation. I will submit to military searches but pirate searches?!?!? They will stink up my cargo hold. I could see however to taking a faction hit if you destroy their ship after winning a battle.
