johndramey - yes, Heroes of Steel will lock down after a certain point in the story to "Elite Only." It will be at a point where there is a reasonable sized sandbox to play in, but if you want to play it all you will have to pay.

I work a very tight budget, but not to sound too arrogant, I think I can contribute more than cash as an artist. I have an art thread in the Templar Assault forum and I think I could help a lot in content and promotional work. Fallen said that they exist as a company by word of mouth. Well a picture is worth a thousand words, by Shalun Law.

I understand this..but have you guys thought this through all the way?I mean your long time supporters will not flinch, but you run the risk of alienating new players. Apply Bandages And Smile

Yeah, I don't really see how else it could be. Either you lock it after some decent point or gimp the free players in some way. Gimping would, in my opinion, make newer players less inclined to pay for elite as that would be too close to the forever-hated F2P "pay to win" criticism that most people toss around.
I think that, ideally, the free players would get a decent chunk of the overall game to play around in, maybe with some sidequests locked out or customization options locked. Things like specialized gear (maybe axes are really good at wrecking unarmored foes, maces for armored, and swords are nice all-arounders. Free only gets swords?), the more interesting spells, or maybe even the stretch classes. Nothing that makes the game unplayable, but something visible to remind the newer players that "hey, if you pay us $3 you get even more awesome!" Then, let the free players play until some good cliff-hanger. Like, let's say that 1/3 of the way into the game your party finishes it's first "main" objective. Say, bringing some artifact to a garrison for examination. That would be an ideal cut point. The game is "complete" from the perspective of the free players, they just completed their main goal, but there is the promise of more.
After that cut point just put a nice little blurb in the free game text saying "hey, we loved developing this game for you and hope you enjoyed the experience so far. If you want more, upgrade to elite and find out what happens next!"

Well assuming this game has dedicated boss fights, and I do not see how it could not considering they have been a staple of the fantasy genre since...well..since the first geek picked up a joypad xD.assuming this is the case, then cut the freemium version after the first boss.get their blood pumping and take it away.withdrawal will set in and they will fork over $3 happily to get their fix. --Lil' Devil--

Faction Cop - that is generally the plan ... after the first 2-3 hours of play and the first big boss fight comes to a close, the characters are released into a sizeable sandbox area. If you want to try the rest of the story, that will cost a few dollars. As this game is being released on a wider set of markets (PC included) we will have to see where we land! All a work in progress!

I have to say Drew, youve come a VERY long way in three years. Even from your ST Officers art redux to the countershading and reflection on the man's face and armor. You gain levels quickly young Grasshopper. XD.
If I can make a suggestion, when I have an issue with a pose or anatomy, Im not azhamed to llook online for art references. I also got a 3D art reference model for my phone. Both genders, multiple ages and body types. Its a bit time investive but you can move any body part into any position and view from any angle. You might find it useful in generating keyframes, if you decide to work more on walk and run cycles or other animation.

dayan - thanks! I always use reference pics now, something I learned over time and of which I am glad to be a major fan! Second to that, I have bought a few anatomy books and am reading up. Thanks for the compliments. One of the most rewarding experiences is going back and re-doing old game art and seeing the giant leaps I have taken by putting the two together. That old barbarian is ... well, he was in my couple of weeks
