You might want to talk of 'constrained' and 'unconstrained' movement.

I really like the idea of different kind of movement and action depending on the situation (having only turn based action in TA has always prevent me from getting deeper into the game). IMO it serve the story better to feel the difference between combat and exploration mode.
Nice work guys !

You might want to talk of 'constrained' and 'unconstrained' movement. Yeah, we haven't landed on terms we like yet for the two modes of turn. We are looking for something with less characters (and less risk of typos!) than constrained / unconstrained. Great suggestion though! Free / ...? We'd love more suggestions!

You might not even need to have a technical term for it all. Can you just talk about "In combat...you and your opponents will take turns" etc. and "when exploring/travelling/not in combat...you will not need to take turns" etc....

contributor - perhaps that's the best way to approach it. Definitely looking to keep this simple. The blog post probably focuses too much on the differences and stuff, not exactly the "in-game" information you might need. Alpha will help us get all these things straightened.

I would suggest the names be simply "Combat" and "Free" movement modes. That way, you can include a small icon somewhere on the screen. Have it be green with a "F" in it for free and red with a "C" in it for combat. Just have the icon cycle between the two depending on what mode the player is in at the moment. It would be a relatively simple way to distinguish between the two on screen, making it very apparent which mode the player is in at the moment. I'll try to make a mock-up of what I'm talking about, because I'm not very good at explaining it in words. *edit* Here's a very quick, very dirty mock-up of what I mean. I'm sure you are using that area for something already, but you get the idea.

I agree with johndramey the "free/combat" mode is simpler. +1

Free / combat are good game terms, but we are really picky about dedicating any UI real estate to a flag for it one way or the other. The button you are planning to replace is very important, it just doesn't have its icon yet

I don't think it need any flag to know when you're in combat or not. Maybe if all movement are limited in combat mode like in TA (visually showing where you can move) and dropping it in free mode it would be clear enough to avoid the need of a flag. Just my 2 cent here...

beuns - I guess I was trying to agree. Anyway, the change should be subtle but clear at the same time. It doesn't need to take up a lot of UI space. As it is now, it is whether or not the character is showing an AP register. If the AP register is showing, you're in combat. If not, then you're in free mode. Can't wait to get this into everyone's hands@
