Its easy to see how much work has gone into the ship design and the vast array of ships that are available, but there comes a time when most players would like to design and build their own specific ship for their chosen profession. Would it be possible that after a certain time, or after attaining an award, for us to be able to design and build our own? The cost would have to be higher as it will be a unique ship, but that's only to be expected. The upgrades go some way to allowing us to do that but imagine what we could create if we were able to design our own. The only restriction being what cash we had available. No more need for you to have to spend time designing more if we could do it ourselves In my opinion this would be an excellent addition to the game

as much fun as that would be... its really very unrealistic. For example, how much time, and how many people does it take to actually build a prototype of that scale. Look at a car for example. Go online and find out how long it takes, and how many engineers it takes to design a car. Now multiply that by... how many billions to design a space ship? Look at NASA for example. We are talking thousands of people who have trained their whole lives to do what they do, and it still takes years and years and years, and billions of dollars to create a new shuttle design.
Also... the ships we are flying are not in production. They were all built by our AI Narvidians (sp?). We don't actually build the ships that are out there anymore. Anyway, yes it would be a cool concept... but I don't see any real plausible way to implement it into the game in any realistic fashion.

I sholudn't be only case of cash. Maybe you should have some amount of points to givethem to hull/armor etc. But I agree with ryan, it's not very realistic. Could be an award for reaching lv100

Hi. An offtopic question. I've seen fragments of data like "ships were all built by Narvidians", "HK Torps are Narvidians", "Computers are Narvidians". And of course Narvidian artifacts are Narvidian Can someone point me to the ST RPG background history or at least the history of Narvidians?

Some background history can be gleaned from the rumors you hear in the Spice Bars and Palaces. If you click enough you will get the basics of the background. The rest comes as bits and pieces Cory has mentioned in various parts of this forum. The easiest way might be to use the search engine to find the treads where he mentions "Narvidian" or "Shalun."
Cory likely has a background storyline he is keeping under wraps until he is ready to add the official Main Quest for the game.

Regarding new ship purchasing, it would be nice to hit that button and get a listing of what's available at that dock. Why not jump right to the review plans pop up? If I'm not in the market for a pirate shuttle, I'm not going to check out the specs in the showroom. I'm going to go right to the Spear Class, Jango Class, or Terror Class docks.
BTW, I just shot down my first Pirate Hawk. That is a sweet looking chassis.
Also, do the factions specialize in certain ship types? It would be a neat way to make the ship styles more distinctive. Maybe the Steel Song does the Sword, Spear, Blade, and Terror Class ships and the Thulun do the Jango style cruisers. Javat might do corvettes and spacetrucks. Cadar ships might be ones that are more torpedo-heavy and Rychart might be gun-heavy with DeValos having more balance.

True. as an aside, does anyone here think that some of the freighter/space truck ships have too few hold spaces?
I'm looking at an Atmo space truck right now, and it's only got 35 hold. Many of the standard combat ships have more (eg Pirate Reaper = 50). Even the boldly named "Mega Freighter" only has 80 hold.
The last thing you want is a cargo ship that costs almost 1 unit of water-fuel per turn in red zones and only limited hold.

Some of the merchant ships are designed to be short hop or planet-to-planet haulers.
"Atmo" is a name attached to small "near atmosphere" haulers. I do agree that the ship has too small a hold for deep space use!

You need a sweet intimidation score to go long haul in one of those space trucks.
"We ain't got room for your fancy extra water, boys. This is an Atmo Hauler, not a Star Liner. You will recycle your waste and you will like it!"
