Is there some place that I may be missing where it describes in detail what each ship upgrade does? Almost all of them are obvious and will say like “Sails +30%” etc but some of them do not and I cant tell what they do just from the name. I cant think of one off the top of my head as an example tho.

Ok I found a few examples: close rang sonic and attack fighters. Neither of them say what exactly they do.

Both of them help with boarding actions.
Go to the title screen and hit the HELP button. Scroll down to the Ship Upgrades section. Overall, it's still a bit sketchy, but that part of the help file is pretty solid.
