Using "Engines" just before you try to change Range causes chaos in the enemy's engine Room.
Using "Decks" just before you try to Board causes chaos in the enemy's Crew decks.
Both are good options and do more targeted (but less overall damage) than "Guns"

@starfixer, I am not saying that combat is easy in Impossible - but rather, you understand the lay of the land and therefore manage your combat situations carefully. You still lose 9 captains out of 10 - but if you've played lots of games at easier levels, you understand that 10% survival rate is pretty damned good Not for me. Well, you're kinda stuck then. You're not supposed to live forever, and I can't see that changing until ST2 when permadeath is configurable. _______________________________ "Issue the standard Cadar greeting, Ensign." And I don't know if, at highest difficulty, Cory will implement optional permadeth. Hardcore Diablo without the .. err ... permanence?

All our games need at least one difficulty that kills you permanently and you have to start over. I need that setting to stay interested. Custom difficulties for all as well.

zalztorus - welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your experience. All Trese Brothers games have a very serious difficulty scale, and it often takes people off guard because they simply don't expect Challenging to be so! It's a great point about trying to warn people that early combat is bad. Through what means would you, personally, have gotten the message best? If the First Mate told you? If you saw it in the "intro screens" explaining the game, or if it was int he help file? We'd love your feedback. And again, welcome to the community! Thanks, I suppose the first mate letting you know would work since its right there at the start. Certainly putting a blurb in the combat help section would key someone in too. The frustration was that I was trying to play military officer and came into it thinking I could hold my own against similarly leveled captains in weaker ships. I could see many of the other professions not doing well in combat from the get go, but to me its just counter intuitive that an MO or bounty hunter would fair poorly. That said, im doing better now that I focused on raising tactics and piloting early on.

What would be really nice is an award called "advanced age" (reach lv 100) than when obtained on insane difficulty doubles XP gains for the captain and all future captains. So if you reach that far, although you'll have to eventually start over, you'll get back to where you were quicker.

I worry it sets unrealistic expectations tho.

Ive heard players here get to 80,90. Its not too unrealistic an expectation. Though ive never survived past 46. But that's user error.

I worry it sets unrealistic expectations tho. The lv 50 is a one-time XP boost. This award will double all XP gains, which is very big, hence a big award required to unlock it. So although permdeath is still there, once you reach lv 100 all captains will get to higher levels faster. So at least starting over won't be so "starting ALL over". It'll be like a "final award"

The lv 50 is a one-time XP boost.; Its single use? Or did I read this wrong.

It might sound like a fun idea now, but it wouldn't work.

What about 1.2x XP? ;D
Besides, on high levels, leveling up is really slow as skills and attributes requires a lot of XP to raise? What about a minor XP gain bonus that's based on lv?
