iOS - Hardcore Captain unlock

I am having major trouble getting this award unlocked. Do I have to forego destroying any ships, too?

I've made it to level 5 numerous times on Demanding without changing ships, without buying or trading ships, and without even capturing ships. I did accidentally destroy one pirate I couldn't run from (hull breach, not engine shots).

On the Android version it didn't matter if you destroy enemy ships. Hope you get it sorted.

Did you visit the Hall of Records at any palace after your captain's overall level reached 5?
