It would be nice if you could save your pilot every game year or so. It is very frustrating when playing, finally get the ship and upgrades i want only to go into combat and get 1shot hull breach and have to start all over. For me the game really dosent get going untill about year 5 game time. Before then I am running from just about everything cause I do not have my skills up to snuff to really do anything.
Awesome game though... im addicted.

Save Game provides a safety net that makes harder game levels significantly easier. If you were able to constantly save your game, you could take risks like going to explore the really nasty planets to find good stuff. However, it would be nice for the lower game levels to help out the person learning the ropes. How about something like: Basic = unlimited saves Normal = Save once per year Challenging = Save once every 2 years Demanding and above = no ability to save

The problem is this is a rougelike game IN SPACE! (Sorry, had to do that.) This type of game normally doesn't use saves but forces the player to seriously consider their actions. Basic and normal modes do give you a break from death and the enemies are supposed to be easier.
I've been playing casually since November and I'm just now solidifying my survival techniques. Most of that is by daring to be reckless sometimes.

Saving game on levels where's no risk of dying is pointless.

If the save is done at the beginning of each "year" (or every x years), you would still have to take risks. Auto saving takes away the ability for a spacer to save just before they try something risky, so does help with keeping some sort of challenge.
In saying that, I do agree that part of the fun of ST is actually just being able to survive, and having a "save" safety-net does make things significantly easier (hence suggesting saves for levels that are more suited for those just starting out).

I have heard that some people "incubate" captains in RPG and then copy them to Elite for wild and crazy test runs. It does allow you to make unlimited copies.
Saved Games today are impossible to separate but the future is bringing many changes. We shall see!

If you don't want your captain to die, play on Normal or Basic.
Maybe make a new difficulty called "Boo-Hoo Crybaby?" Also, in this level, everybody likes you and pirates send you fruit baskets and love letters. All Cadar torpedoes are replaced with sternly worded warning letters.
Earning Awards should be disabled on captains that are not a continuous gameplay. (Dark Nemesis has probably spaced about a dozen captains on my droid so far. If it wasn't so hard to earn, I wouldn't be trying so hard to earn it!)

I'm just feeling touchy about the latest captain to get hulled in my quixotic quest for Dark Nemesishood.
I'm pleased that someone is able to laugh at my pain.
