I was getting really lost on the map the other day and I thought, you know what would make this map more navigable? Different star colors.
You don't have to get crazy, but if a few were red giants, blue dwarfs, or white dwarfs, the map would have more landmarks.

Ooo yeah. If you're going down that path, you could have a few additional planets thrown in - some with rings, some that are red with visible lava flows, etc

AND ... maybe just for a laugh - have a black hole hidden somewhere within the quadrant. If you are unlucky enough to fly by it, you have a % chance of being destroyed. New rumor: "A spacer came in the other day and talked about how close he got to being sucked into oblivion. Some sort of black hole he says. I'd steer clear of that sector if I were you."

Yeah, because I need something else to just kill me out of the blue in this game...radiation storms, aliens, friggin' Steel Song pirates, and big-hatted Rychart bounty hunters...
Maybe a few palette shifted gas giants would help with landmarks, too. I like that the terrestrial planets have some variation. They tend to be mostly what I use to get around.
Also, how about marking the origin (0,0) of the grid?

+1 for visual landmarks on the Elite map!
The RPG map was small enough that I knew where I was (usually), but I too get lost on the larger Elite map. Even using the Zoom Map view.
I like the ideas posted above.
Another ideas (that are not mutually exclusive with the above): Change the background color (replacing the star field) to the color of the controlling faction. OR Change the color of the sector's dot (currently only red or green).
The shape of zones and adjacent zones could make a location easier to identify. For example, where is the only place on the map with Thulun territory on two sides of Javat territory?
This could be especially helpful once Cory implements the ability of planets to change Factions!
What do people think? Cory, is this easily codable?

When you're done with all that, don't forget to add a rumor that remarks about how clever and good-looking I am.

If you can't do that, at least consider some flavor-enhancing commentary about Rychart hat size, Cadar negotiation tactic, and the personal hygiene of most Steel Songers' mothers.

Ya know, I've just started a new game with a Steel Song captain and I have you know that his mother is very clean ... and went for premium credits when he sold her on the black market!
