It still appears to be possible to gain Faction standing by sitting at a Faction planet, buying up spare Weapons/Electronics/Artifacts, and then immediately selling them back (usually for a small loss, depending on Negotiation skill I guess).
I realise it's hard to work around this since it requires the game to remember where the items came from.
One solution might be to maintain a historic sell-minus-buy tally for each Faction for each restricted item type. You only gain Faction standing when your net 'sell' position increases. Kind of clunky. At lower levels of Negotiation, maybe the financial loss is enough of a balancing factor. For high levels of Negotiation, maybe this 'exploit' is desired beneficial consequence of having the ability to sell ice to Eskimos - so maybe no fix is needed?

This was discussed regarding Records before. I think the answer was that you were basically pulling this stuff off of the black/grey market and putting back under faction control when you resold it.
Buying and selling records this way is one of the best ways to get a faction to like you enough to sell you a trade permit.

oldalchemist -- Correct. This loyal Captain is buying up local Weapon supplies just to sell them back to the Palace at a steep discount. Who wouldn't want to increase his reputation? "Exploit" is a very strong word since the game does track this behavior (suppresses XP trade bonus) and it costs money, risks Trade Wars and generates a pseudo-randomized amount of reputation.

Maybe he's using 'XXX' and 'exploit' because he's selling a certain kind of Record?
"Lovely ladies of Cadar wearing only... Oh face it, you're only buying these because you want to put the covers over your copies of 'Hat Fancy.' We all know you're the Rychart prince in exile. $750 each and I was never here."

Cadar has ladies?!? I would have thought it far more efficient for the Cadar military to just use a pinch of crystal, a dash of metal, some luxury food to clone a Cadar citizen. Use 2x as much metal and a little less luxury food to manufacture a Cadar Torp.

"Lovely Ladies of Cadar" is actually just a torpedo catalog.
