The death of a CyberKnight is seldom a pretty thing but generally comes quickly and at least affords the illusion of the CK going down in a brilliant blaze of glory fighting against overwhelming odds.
But occasionally such death is instead a slow creaping doom that makes the CyberKnight squirm about in agony as they attempt to escape their coming demise.
This is the tale of one such unfortunate soul. At the start of her career this CK seemed to have a bright future ahead. Being graced with more experience and nu-yen than most which she quickly turned to her advantage getting a better deck and the best weapons and armor. A couple quick jobs for Brave Star got her Texas Powers V-Chip and had her rapidly climbing his ladder. A few escort runs for the Yakuza out of Old Church and Mars out of Beacon Hill gave her the nu-yen for some chrome and a bit of positive rep with both. When things would start to heat up a little to much a trip to the Old Waterfront and a bit of time in the Wet Bars back room cooled it off.
After a particularly profitable series of runs she found herself in the Tobin St. Slums, her bank account a little over ¥15,000 and one last contract to deliver down to Old Church where she planned to spring for some new chrome to help give her a bit more of an edge in the rare fights she'd had.
It was at this point that she made the fatal decision that eventually led to her demise. Thanks to her last few jobs having been fairly low key deliveries she had generated almost no heat and so decided to see if the boys with the Ox might have another job heading in her direction. Sure enough they had an escort to Old Church in the offing and having recently made a couple deliveries in AzTeks favor, they weren't looking for her head on a pole at the moment. Indeed at that point she had actually managed to get everyone except the tin cans at Knight Horizon to at least slightly positive rep and even KH had softened its attitude towards her to just finding her mildly unpleasant as opposed to a serious menace. So she took the escort from the Ox and set off for North end.
A little disagreement with some drunk Oxes near the border generated another point of heat before she could lose them and slip around the wall into North end. But hey no one was hurt and it was all in fun.
Then some lunitic decided to try bringing the dome down and unable to completely escape with her client to protect she suffered some nasty wounds. Since she by that point was nearly to the Old Church border she decided to slap a med kit on the worst of them, pop a couple stims and finish the job before seeking professional medical treatment that what include those nice new Chipped Skills III. Of course the commotion drew the attention of an AzTek patrol and despite submiting to them, her recent run in with the Ox boys and proximity to the blast had them screaming criminal scum at her and shooting her heat through the top of the dome before they let her go.
Getting into Old Church finally she breathed a sigh of relief upon dumping the suit at the Water Department before heading for the Lucky Phoenix to deliver that last package. The Yakuza liked her after all she'd done enough jobs for them and partied in their back rooms enough that all that heat the Tekies had raised was just a faint bit of warmth on a chilly night.
A nasty toxic leak that seared her eyes and lungs despite the hardened Infiltrator Suit she wore had her quickly changing her mind and steering straight for Smith Biomedical. Her package wasn't due for another day and a half after all.
