So yesterday I decided, for probably the 30th time, to start a new game. This time I bumped it up from Normal to Demanding, just to see how horribly my captain would die.
Now then, for an ironic and unexpected twist, I'm actually playing better than I was on Normal. I've got far more money, I managed to swipe a Cutlass Class ship from a pirate(I'm a Military Officer). That was LEAGUES better than the Vae Victus. And much better gas mileage too.
Anyway, I sided with Cadar from the get-go, and instead of trying to keep the peace with several factions, I said to hell with them all. Now I just zoom around doing bounty contracts, random killing sprees, and whatever else I can in the name of the Cadar Syndicate!
Me happy.

Good work -- exactly how I roll.
Play all of the game and you will do very well.
If there is a shortage, even a Pirate should go merchant for 10 rounds.
See a Spy War vs. a Planet with 2 Security? Hit it for a few surveillances!
I think the game is a LOT more fun with the "I'm only friendly with 1 or 2" Factions.
In the end, it can come crashing down as the other 4 send Bounty Hunters after you.
But, like you said -- if you've been tearing up the quadrant those bounty hunters are in for a surprise because you've got a Cutlass Class and 500K Credits

I'm so sad. Shortly after posting this, I ran into a random Independant merchant in a Vae Victus(I can't recall it's actual ship type), and somehow managed to avoid getting boarded for two turns, dodges my torpedos, and then flew up to me and obliterated me. I kind of just sat there and stared with my jaw dropped. It was the most random death ever.

Oh, sorry, it was a Steel Song merchant. I have no idea why I typed in Independant. >_>

but merchants don't have a hostile AI ... they only have shoot and flee smarts.
I'm going to go check to see if there is anything I can find that would cause hostile merchants.
Anyone else seeing this? Merchants with *bright red* instead of *brown/red* and attacking instead of shoot to flee?

Maybe it was a freak event? After all, I didn't die the moment combat started. It was several turns in. I just got whomped real bad.
Of course, because of this, I have sworn vengeance on Steel Song in every game I play.

Wait a minute, I was jumped by a Steel Song merchant two months ago and several upgrades ago. I initially retreated but he hit me with a torpedo. I turned around to attack and wipe him out. His ship was smaller than the pirate barge Captain Shaft was flying but his pilot skill was lower than the hull size, which was probably why before the fight got started, the merchant somehow blew out my engines with one shot. Luckily, Captain Shaft's intimidation skill was high enough that the most the merchant did was steal his torpedoes. But still, something funny is going on with those Steel Song merchants.
