For exploration, when I started out, I focused on planets that had high Explore/Hazard ratio. Some made a lot of sense, others not so much. If you wanted to forsake exploration, then certainly, focus early on shortages and surpluses. If you have to choose between a shortage and a surplus, choose shortage every time. IF you have some buffer of cash (eg around $200k + a nice ship), then definitely start caching surpluses rather than selling outright. Maintain relationships and get trading permits. Watch conflicts like a hawk because as an explorer or trader, you're at the whims of factional politics and there is nothing worse than trading in a shortage, only to find that one of your friends now despises you because of a trade embargo. |

Good job John! pulling the guide together! i hope this one gets added to the manual at the begining, i know new players are always looking for explanations of this Awesomeness the Trese brothers have created!

Glad you found it helpful. If it gets added to the manual that would be cool, but either way as long as new players can use it to get a handle on the game then I'm happy. I know the first couple weeks I had the game I was floundering around and trying to figure out just what I should be doing.
Of course this guide is built for explorers, but anyone who wants to contribute to it is free to do so. I'll always credit you in the first post, and I think having as much information for new players as possible is a good thing for the TB.

I am lucky enough to have no dignity whatsoever, so as soon as I run into something I don't understand I immediatly turn to the internet screaming "HELP ME, RANDOM INTERNET PEOPLE!" Most of the time it works out..... well enough. Luckily when I did it with ST it lead me to this board. While I didn't actually get around to joining it until a year later, the board provided me with so much information that I could sort of kind of not suck at ST.
TA has always been my TB game of choice, but with HoS coming out sometime this year it might usurp TA.
