If it's true that standard ship equipment items (guns, torps, armour, sails, engines) have a secret quality factor, depending on which Faction manufactured them, then:
1. There should be more hints of this in the flavour text.
2. There should be Star Dock/Military Base options to Replace existing equipment (upgrade to presumably better quality) and not just Repair missing/damaged equipment.
The flavour text for the Factions in the Create Captain screen does hint at differing qualities for equipment between Factions. But I interpreted this as affecting availability of Upgrades, not quality of standard equipment. How about adding some flavour text rumours like the following:
+ Whaddya looking at? Never seen a man with neutron burns before? Ain't my fault. Our Captain was trying to slip past a nova to a avoid a little local trouble, when the steering failed on those accursed {Thulun} solar sails. May the Father receive his miserly soul.
+ You can say what you like, but when a magma bomb detonates agains the hull I want the comfort of cold {Cadar} plate between my precious flesh and the Big Black.
