I think it would be good to have a warning before completing a transaction if it means you're about to violate a trade embargo.
The thing I find is that these chop and change so regularly that it can be easy to lost track. And as violating one can result in a huge rep penalty with that faction, it would be better IMO to be warned before you complete the transaction, rather than just having a reminder after the event.
I've accidentally made myself a hated criminal with a faction because of this, which is something I am trying to actively avoid.

hordriss, welcome to the forum. I know how much it sucks to find out you've accidentally sold a bunch of goods against someone's trade embargo and now you have to dig yourself out of a hole of negative RP. The political officer will warn you about buying and selling during an embargo. She will appear on the first planet screen and in the exchange as well to tell you that there is an embargo. It would be nice to always have a warning regardless of having the PO or not, but I guess it's a choice that the developers have made.

How do you get a political officer? I've been all over the place and not come across one yet.
Also, I was wondering if your own faction is subject to a trade embargo, do you get penalised for using its exchange?

Actually, the whole trade embargo situation in my current game is ridiculous. I'm a relatively short way into a game, on basic difficulty, and 5 out of the 6 factions are involved in trade embargos! Kind of ridiculous.

@hordiss - welcome to the forum and thanks for the feedback! Conflicts and Rumors are churned out of a political generator that relies a lot on random dice. Hopefully the situation for your Captain will blow over!

Thanks for the response. I'm hoping the embargos end soon, as I am trying to avoid becoming a criminal in the eyes of the factions, but this currently means pretty much relying on contracts and trying not to run out of fuel when nowhere near an independent planet!
One other thing which I think would make sense with regards to the trade embargos, would be not getting penalised for using your own faction's exchange even during an embargo.
Anyway, thanks for the game - it is an excellent game. I bought the Elite version a long time ago, but only really started playing it properly these last couple of weeks. I have given it a 5* review on Google Play, and it is good to see that the devs like to keep connected to their audience as openly as you do.

One of the most valuable ways to circumvent trade embargoes cramping your supplies are caches. Creating caches on multiple different planets, even if it is only to hold a few hundred units of fuel can be the difference between cruising and mutiny. Obviously you wouldn't buy up during the embargo, because that would defeat the purpose of why you are creating the caches in the first place.
As to the comment about being penalized by using your own faction's exchange, unfortunately once you've become a spacer, you are more a creature of the high seas err space. You're not tied to the faction that birthed you, an aspect reinforced by the fact you can have -RP on your faction, be a wanted criminal, and executed on the spot.
Expanding on this thought for a moment - yes, you get some bonuses because you fly your faction's flag and even more if you have your faction's ship, but conflicts are between factions. If you are Cadar and buy at Cadar, you can still piss off Steel Song if there is a trade embargo between the two. Similarly, in the above situation, if you bought at Steel Song's exchange, you're going to piss of Cadar.
A long time ago, someone suggested fuel be exempt from reputation impact, but the logical argument against that is the fact that in a war or heavy embargo situation, fuel becomes even more critical because it is what helps you move the cargo around in the first place. If anything, there should be double the RP impact from trading water in an embargo situation, but I think Cory was being generous <grin>.
