Hi
Call me crazy but I read all 12 pages of postings in the Tips Section. Got some great advice just didn't get the gold I was panning for.
One post really helped me understand why an upgrade isn't available when you come back to a Star Port. (Thanks Cory)
The torpedo explanation by Slayernz was tremendous, especially explaning how the aft battery works. I was really getting mauled by a ship that I could not outrun and wanted to board me. I managed to get to medium range, would the aft torp battery still have hit him at that range at full damage? But that really isn't what I'm asking about.
1. How many ugrades can a given ship hold? I'll intentionally not hang any cargo pods on my ship because I'm looking for the smugglers hold. I find the hold and have the cash but can't buy it. Is this because I put on Nano sails or some other upgrade?
2. Does the hull size of your ship determine how many upgrades you can have? If so, how can you plan for it in advance.
3. Can you swap out one upgrade for another, or is the ship modification permanent ?

I'm not a pro when it comes to ST at all, so take these with a grain of salt. That said, I think I know the answers to these.
1) Every ship can hold 1 of each class of upgrade. Meaning, one propulsion, internal, weapon, etc upgrade.
2) Nope!
3) Nope, the upgrade is permanent. This is why you might want to keep a couple ships later in the game.

Yes @jdr you've got it exactly right.
So you can never have more than 5 upgrades, one from each class. Reasons upgrades are unavailable are that 1) not every upgrade is available on every planet so if you see the button but it is greyed out you'll just have to keep moving till you find the upgrades you want. 2) You've already installed an upgrade from that category, in which case it should only display the category heading. You can open this and see the upgrades (for reference sake I guess) but you can't install any of them. This is why you can't install the smuggler's hold in your example. The nano-sails are in the same category. 3) Certain upgrades have to be unlocked or can only be purchased if you have military rank, but these are pretty clear because there is text that explains it.
And yes, you are crazy for reading all twelve pages! Welcome to the forum, you'll fit right in around here!

Many thanks johdramey, and lurker. Now I know it wasn't just a spice hangover. Man I was so hopeing somebody would notice this one, with the new info, and setting some of my questions into nfidence.
Want another laugh? Finally off basic difficulty, Puff out my chest and crow about really winning on Normal. (Get the towl still wet behind the ears).
Posted a good review today on ST Elite. Purchased CK Elite. Could be awhile before I play, ST is really one of the best.
Thanks again guys I keep messing up, when I try to insert text in a line I've already typed seems to think I mean to delete, kind of moves backwards. This ever happen to you?

If you're on a PC, hit the Insert key if it's overwriting text you've already typed. If you're on a laptop, you could be inadvertently touching the touchpad which will move the cursor and make you look like you're incoherent. The second one has happened to me many times.

Don't worry about finally moving off of basic difficulty, there are all stripes here. If you want to force yourself into a new playstyle come join the Pirate community challenge we have running right now. I'm playing on the higher difficulty and it's.... well... hard! Lots of fun though!

Thanks for all the tips.
Tried out Challenge difficulty with Pirate packed all my points into Pilot, Tactics and Stealth. Did pretty darn good.
Ok I say, Let me try that Demanding level. Can you say "Torpedo in the exhaust port?" This boy's going back a level for more schooling.
Really don't understand the Hall of Records unlocks? Does the game keep track so when you create a new Captain those options become available?
For example I killed an alien and got a message "Hard now unlocked", Well you cannot change the difficulty level your current captain is playing. So am I getting it right?

john - Unlocks are made available to any captain (new or old) who is in the game. You may have limits because of difficulty, if that makes sense. Unlocks are available for new captains as well.
