To use pirate character, you should first create a pirate character of course. Then you should do the first contract of course. Then do not fill up your cargo hold with full water fuel so that pirates won't detect you. Complete easy quest until you have 100+ or 50+ Reputation. Upgrade this skills: Negotiate, warrior, tactics and pilot. Go to a nearby faction planet and gather some rumors like merchants hire a security (something like that) For a valuable shipment (something like that also). Go to that sector that have a lot of merchant. Do not patrol the sector. You'll just waste your water fuel. Go back and forth from sector to the rumored sector. Once you found a merchant, Approach him and board him. Loot his stuff and sell it to a nearby planet. That's how you use a pirate

The key thing is buying the permit and warrant. The permit allows you to sell illegal items for loads of cash, and the warrant keeps you from losing rep and gives bounty hunter contracts.

Great post. You can get by without a Trade Permit by selling to Independents.
The Pirate can also use Rank to participate in Trade Wars (and gain XP by killing Merchants.)

What sucks about selling to Indy's, though, is their crap economy bogs down the prices, and, therefore the amount of credits you get out of the sale.
That 1K or whatever credits that go to a permit is worth it, in my opinion.

And you need a permit to prevent pirates of that faction from attacking you, unless you have really high rank which isn't a focus of the pirate. I like to harass independent ships as looting and destroying then doesn't cause rep loss.I also look for independent deep space rumours of merchant fleets and refugees, as many merchants are found in those rumoured areas.

Steel Song Clan. Several members on this forum hate them for some reason.

Looking at the math tho it looks like using the map vs. Patrol doesn't pan out.

Steel Song Clan. Several members on this forum hate them for some reason. Slayernz made a cult out of hating Steel Song when SS pirates kept going after his ships in the early game. Personally, Steel song is my favorite prey because all their space can be relatively ignored. A player can avoid most Steel song territory for most of their gameplay. It is, also, the only faction name that doesn't fit with the motif of original and odd names of "Javat, Rychard, Devaltos, Thulun, Cadar". WHile these are NAMES, Steel Song sounds more like an "organization". rabid

Stellar War Logistics: If you are on good terms with De Valtos, and or Rychart.. Repeated blockades of Xeen Prime, provide a short supply line. You can make a quick jump back to Rychart Prime, only 3 sectors away. Refuel, repair, sell banned captured goods. Syndicate Core is only 4 sectors away. You can't count on either planet to have unlimited supply of water fuel. So when one gets low go to the other.
Time passed can have a big impact on when a planet has ship upgrades you want, what type of ships are available for auction, and rumor restock. So you just keep pounding away at Xeen Prime, and check for these when returning to friendly port.
It's heaven when Rychart, and De Valtos go to war at the same time against Steel song. Now you are getting much more rep points, and exp ponts. I'm really impressed with how some players get very high positive rep with all factions. I never expect to be every faction's friend, so right from the start choose Steel Song as an enemy. If I get into political danger with a faction I don't want to lose privlages with I just go do something else. One thing I can count on peace never lasts, I'll have another chance to go after Steel Song sooner or later.

I also hate steel song. They sounded like the song dynasty on china. And they really seemed to hate me even though i am not even doing bad things to them.

Song can be oriental oriented ... erm.... Now that sounded weird but I think I still got my point across. I always thought of them as religious and alien hybrids. I see them like High Ogres. I also happen to make them one of Rabid Rabbit's favorite factions. Not that such stops him from occasionally turning their ships into Christmas lights.

SsC, Javat and Rychart always seem to hate me, even if its just due to breaking embargoes.
