For locked contents in both the free and the elite versions, instead of being unable to select the locked contents and returning to the default profession/ship with the short pop-up message, would it be possible to change it so that the locked content is displayed in the description section with "Elite Only" and/or "Locked until you receive X reward" which goes away when the condition is met and only display the pop-up message if the player tries to start the game with the locked contents?

So for a proposed user flow:
User selects "Spy" profession, but user has not unlocked Spy profession from previous activity.
Instead of the profession defaulting to "Star Trader", instead it stays on "Spy", but the text below shows
"The Spy Profession is not yet unlocked until you achieve the Expert Contractor award on Demanding difficulty or higher"
The "Continue" button is greyed out until you select a different valid captain.
