I would like the ability to reset your skills (including what you started out with and what you spent on increasing the maximum). Perhaps at a price...say 1M credits or something along those lines.

For me, the captain is the sum of his or her experience. This means that if you focused on Exploration initially, you'd end up with high explorer skills. It who you are. You can't unlearn these skills - even if they become somewhat redundant in the later phases of the game. Me - I have regrets about some of the experience and choices that I made through life, but no matter how much money I have (which isn't much), I can't change what makes me me.
The good thing about the game is that once you're underway, assuming you haven't really done a horrendous job at point allocation, you should be at least doing "okay". If you're beginning to lose, it's gradual - you very seldom go from being nigh on invincible to attacked, boarded, and partially incinerated in one encounter. You get the occasional hit, and if you ignore the signs, you get hit more often. This means you should really have time to adjust your allocation.

I was looking into this and I don't think it possible. The ST game engine doesn't have enough information to reset your XP, for any number of credits. I'm afraid I cannot offer this feature in ST. Maybe in future games!
