I take it that is highly dependent on if the game decided to give you a lot of loot, which for me it doesn't. >.< Only upgrade Explorer (Pilot is optional). That is what i do and i still get very low return |

I remember seeing Cory say to explore using rank times 2 crew. I usually get a pretty good haul. (Or lose an eye.)

All about rumors, picking the right planet, having good Explorer skill and Tactics is really key as well.
Strength will keep your eyes attached to your head.
Explorer * 2 = good rule of thumb for party size
