Right now, the military officer class is much more favored than the bounty hunter as discounted promotions (which you can be paying for 60 or more promotions and possibly more if you violate alliance oaths) are much more of an incentive than discounted death warrants (which you can be paying for death warrants around 7 or 8 times if you fail missions). I have a suggestion for a simple update that makes sense and is easy to implement.
Make all bounty missions (find and execute or arrest and bring to justice) pay 5% more for bounty hunters and outline this bonus in the class description.
Bounty hunters get paid more for these contracts because hunting bounties are their profession. You would obviously expect to pay a bounty hunter more than a merchant for a contract killing and expect a higher quality job.

Don't forget that the military officer also gets a recruit bonus: it gets more recruits at halls.
What about BHs also getting extra XP in addition to extra pay, and getting an increased chance of bounty contracts over other professions. Or even better, what if they were offered special bounty contracts not offered to other professions? These "special" bounty contracts would give more XP, pay and rep than other bounty contracts, and what would make them special is that the bounty targets would be in ships with extra high levels, special AIs, or even alien ships! Also, unlike regular bounties where one successful surveillance is enough to use the ability, several successful surveillance operations may be required to use the contract tracking ability, or the target could be so skilled that it may be impossible to track him altogether!
It's the bounty's job to go after the targets that are too dangerous for anyone else.

Or what about the BH getting a surveillance bonus that would be half as good as spies and the military getting a blockade bonus that would be half as good as zealots? The BH's surveillance bonus would work well with his death warrant bonus and tactics starting skill, and the military's blockade bonus would work well with his rank bonus and intimidate starting skill.

Cool i didn't know that. So if there's a spy battle with another faction u should get a search and destroy contract vs that faction and keep performing surveillance on them because you get a bonus? Extra XP sounds like it'd be pretty good early on too.
Ps don't forget about the alien flags for hulks/narvidians/hives instead of the independent flag as well as removing or changing the text about them being independent startraders that are unpredictable.

I like all of the above. The part that really gets my goat is how many times the BH has official planetary navy encounters. Bounty hunter missions are illegal everywhere.
Even when sanctioned in real life the goverment would never admit the contract was taken out. For example you won't find legal assinations as an article in our Constitution. We all know the CIA has done it, but you won't see it on CNN. The point is undetected infiltration, and ambush are the BH stock, and trade. Remember the old Mission Impossible TV series?
"If any of your IMF force is caught or killed the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions."
Proposal: Any bonus can only occur if you are a Bounty hunter, and only during a Bounty hunter mission. You don't get your bonuses for any other type of contract.
Bonus: Much fewer encounters with planetary naval forces. However it is easier for other Bounty hunters to find you. You are'nt a spy, you are'nt hear to make money collecting records. You want to detect your prey as soon as possible, and extract asap. So increase the chance of locating the target on the first or second attempt.
I want to emphasize again. All the bonuses described here, and previous posts only apply during the excution of a bounty contract otherwise you take the same chances you normally do.
P.S. How about a special Ship Class that only a BH can purchase?

That might be a good idea for a future profession though, at least in st2

@starfixer "That would be more like an assassin or a black ops officer than a bh. That might be a good idea for a future profession though, at least in st2."
I don't really see a differnce. Assainsins, and Bounty hunters are both stone cold killers. I'm thinking of the old wanted posters "Dead or Alive". When the BH captures a criminal, they will most likely be executed upon delivery to a faction government. On search, and destroy missions. You usually get a contract discribed something like, "Criminal is beyond redemption, go to Spice hall destroy him, and his ship.". There are many times my BH was unable to bring them in alive, and ended up destroying the ship right along with the criminal Right now any class can take a bounty mission, that's fine. My take on this thread was to balance the advantages the Military officer has over the Bounty Hunter. Not to balance the BH with a new character class. Some of the posts in this thread also propose additional bonuses that increase the balance of power with all other classes, not just the Military officer . I think what what you are trying to help me understand, is not to ask for something that cannot be currently supported in the Star Traders engine, and it to add it to a wish list for ST 2? My post is just a daydream fired up by the great imaginative ideas you, and others expressed in this thread.
