Hey folks!
I've seen a reference to "the turn of the dark century."
Is there a time limit to the game? Is that it? Does your game end/force retired/galaxy invaded by unbeatable aliens/something at some point in time?

No, there is no time limit and currently no end/victory conditions, though they are being considered.
The Dark Century is just an award, and part of the background flavour of the game. But yes it probably does mean that we are all going to die, horribly.

the storyline we are working on involves a series of events that lead up to the Second Narvidian Event.
The game will not include a "time limit" other than it does today.
The time limit in ST RPG takes the form of an ever increasing difficulty scale.
More alien, bigger ships, smarter captains and more hostile Factions.

Oh my....
The creator himself has deigned to address me. o.O
As a second question, could someone explain enemy ship captains to me?

Explain how? They're bad, probably want to destroy your ship and enslave your crew.
I hear Cadar policy is to greet all enemy captains with a Torpedo and plasma cutter.
Can you rephrase the question?

"Enemies are bad." That might be the funniest thing I've heard all day!
The work-in-progress updated Player's Guide has 9 pages on Combat & enemy Captains (how to fight, how they fight, which Captain's will start fights, effects of winning on Rep, what can happen if you lose, yada, yada, yada). And Cory just summed it up in one sentence! Love it! In fact, I just added it to the draft.

By "ship captain" are we referring to the captain of any random enemy ship, or are there special characters that give bonuses to enemy ships?

dashofpepper: Every Ship has a Captain. When you Created your Captain, you picked his Profession (such as Bounty Hunter, Merchant, Smuggler, Explorer, Military Officer, Spy . . .). Likewise, all Captains you will encounter have a Profession. On the Combat screen, just below the buttons and just above the enemy Ship's Stats are Lvl & Profession. Level encapsulates how much experience the other Captain has. More experienced Captains (higher Lvl) are tougher to beat. Profession impacts how the Captain fights. For example, Pirate Captains tend to be quite aggressive but Merchant Captains will only fire if fired upon. Is this what you were getting at?

Rychart captains ought to always carry a bunch of bonus clothing in the hold: Giant Hats.
There's a clothing shortage? Start waylaying Rychart ships.
It would be cool if factions were known for having more of certain types of cargo.

In terms of what other captains would carry I would guess: Steel Songers are considered assassins so they ought to carry more weapons. Javats are knows as miners so ought to carry either metals or crystals. Rycharts are knows as the best spies so ought to carry electronics or records (or big hats ). The others I don't have much ideas for except for De Valtos. They live right next to the Cadar and have to put up with the other Syndicate factions' squabbling. I would think every De Valtos Captain (and every De Valtos member) would carry LOTS of Vudka!

The Thulun strike me as folks who eat well.
The DeValos seem like they'd have records and spice rather than vudka.
Songers should have booze, weapons, and metal.
