I don't believe there is any way to see a ships tacking and running rating before taking or buying it. Based on what I've learned about wind direction and the importance of tacking ability this seems like a very important detail to know before deciding to change ships.

Also, didn't notice that the price for any given ship was listed (as of last version, that is). Am I blind, or is it actually not shown?

You have to press the button with three horizontal stripes at the ?bottom? of the screen. This makes the price show up across the top. I feel this info should be shown by default though since as you've noted it's not overly obvious. |

When I want to buy a ship I want to know how fast it is, and how close to the wind it can sail. In our past, the secret to being a successful smuggler -- or very rapid packet, deliverer of mail and dispatches was a) to be fast and b) to be able to sail closer to the wind than those craft that are trying to shoot you dead. You will basically have no cargo hold at all, so you can only smuggle things that are small, like gold and jewels and spices -- but that is ok, as you can basically outrun anything on the sea.
