An upgrade that adds rowing oars to reduce speed penalty when sailing against the wind or with 0 masts or sails would be cool.

An upgrade that adds rowing oars to reduce speed penalty when sailing against the wind or with 0 masts or sails would be cool. rowing oars would not work. You actually cannot sail against the wind -- unless the magic in the game lets you -- you must tack. rowing is what you can do if the wind just drops. Something I miss from this game. The wind doesn't change, and the windspeed doesn't either. I think implementing Sea Breezes -- this is a technical term that won't mean what you think it does, unless you already know --- see:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_breeze would be a lot of fun. But it might be hard on the animation. I am already annoyed with the art, that I think should show a ship with sails always full of the wind, thus they are lengthened and shortened as the course changes. And, should you want to sail into the wind, I think we should have animation of the ship tacking. This will make it very clear why one's voyage is taking longer, eating up sails and using up rations. Right now what we have looks sort of like you are driving a car around the sea. Since I spend my summers pissed off at people who cannot sail and who own a status-sailboat-yacht around here, and who drive it like they drive their cars -- always under motor, always in the traffic lanes, nose to nose driving up the coast just like stop and go traffic -- you can take my annoyance more as a reflection on them, and not any real annoyance with the game. But one that showed real tacking would be way cool ....

Sorry, it will never be a sailing simulator -- the game engine and graphics system just are not up to the task.

The current codebase doesn't support anything like that. It uses in-memory tricks to rotate the same image to make the different facing directions for the ship. We could change the art based on wind and ship direction in a future update -- anything is possible!

I agree with grav. Its a bit odd to see a ship move around like a car. Great to hear art updates may be possible. Any ideas for a better upgrade of this type of function?
