So what are everyone's favorite ships and why? Also, what is your ship's name?
My two favorites are the War Galleon, which I had named War Wind and my current favorite the Pirate Sloop which I have named Quicksilver.
I enjoyed the War Galleon because of its massive number of cannons and rather large cargo capacity. It has pretty beastly stats all around actually. The only major downside is it's POOR tacking rating.
The Pirate Sloop on the other hand has GREAT Running and Tacking which is just fantastic for ration use in theory at least. I do think I've noticed a good improvement over my old War Wind. And despite being such a fast ship it still have a relatively large cargo capacity of 44 and a good number of cannons at 15. I've actually found that I greatly prefer the Pirate Sloop's number of cannons because they seem to consume significantly less Shot and Powder and they seem to hit almost as hard and often.
For upgrades I am really up in the air though because I can't really tell how effective any of them are. I think with the Pirate Sloop I'm going to focus on increasing cargo capacity but I'd love to hear opinions and advice on which are best.

For all phases, (piracy, gathering, exploration, commissions, trading), the merchant Schooner (christened Tr8r h8r) is the best for me. 78 cargo, with cargo locker, cargo hull, 6 sail, and 4 long cannon upgrades. Great and good ratings.
I've tried pretty much all the hulls, and this is the most satisfying.
The war sloop was my other preferred, but the cargo reduction from 55 to 30 killed it.

Currently using a Pirate Sloop called Shloopy. My ideal ship at the moment is the Bank Sloop, but the difference is too little for me to switch since I've already fully upgraded. Benefits are great tacking and running, largest cargo for a combat vessel, decent cannons.
For upgrades, don't remember the names, but it's (+4 sails +3 masts), (+6 masts +2 hull), (30%/+20 crew), Grappling Hooks and Muskets. Wanted to get Whaleboats but haven't seen any since alpha. Also got the Chainshot loader, but feels like a waste at the moment since it's not necessary to use it, but I assume that will be fixed soon.

Whaleboats are in, but I have only seen at a place that under a rumour has 'serious ship improvements' or something. Ditto with the double gun decks. I could only afford one, and the 2x guns work great for me. (So, despite being in Sweden I am not creating the Vasa. Great. :-) see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_%28ship%29 ) But I did not have the cash for both upgrades, and now the whaleboats are gone....

Long since forgotten what the ship type was, renamed her Bessie a long time ago.
Hull: 20 Mast: 18 Sails: 30 Crew: 40 Cargo: 73 Cannons: 20 Long guns: 12 Running and tacking: both good
Upgrades: cargo hull, cargo lockers, reinforced masts, forecastle guns.
Can escape almost any encounter immediately, and when i decide to fight back my long guns mop up anything at range, and huge cargo hold leads to massive profit when trading.

athiosWhy do you prefer the bank sloop to the pirate sloop? Lose 4 masts and 4 long guns, for +4 cargo and +3 cannons. I don't use long guns that often so it doesn't matter to me, whereas the extra cargo and cannons are useful. Fewer masts I can compensate with upgrades. Plus, Bank Sloop has a better icon!

I am using my long guns to shoot pirates. They stop being able to sail as quickly, it seems, and I can then run away from them.
I just found, for sale in a Fishing Village (!) a Merchant Schooner, which has a hold of 60. Been very useful to Nathaniel Sveet. But it attracts Pirates, it seems.

I agree with the bank sloop having a better icon... Why doesn't the pirate sloop look that badass I must warn you though, I'm pretty sure the bank sloop has worse tacking with the pirate sloop, which is the most important stat to me :3

What upgrades impact that? I didn't know anything really did. Hmm, actually, now that you mention it... I retract that statement since I can't really confirm that. It's just based on my *assumption* that the calculations are done similarly to how they are in ST (e.g. Running speed being determined by Sails-to-Hull ratio). But as Cory has stated on multiple threads already, making assumptions about how AoP works based on ST is a *bad idea*. :-)
