Would like a way of replacing existing upgrades without having to replace the entire ship. Even if it would cost double the amount to replace the old upgrade.

Coming soon.
This took a lot of work to re-write the upgrade system so we could remove upgrades.
Not possible in ST but something we CAN support in AoP. I'm looking forward to releasing it.

Awesome! I got quite disappointed when I upgraded my sails by 15% then the next port over found one for 25%. I understood that once an upgrade was in place that it couldn't be adjusted. But found it odd for say crew weapons. Looking forward to a future update.

There will be some rules and limits or course but yes, you'll be able to loot upgrades. This also means that, yes, I have done the coding required to support enemies with upgrades

Yep. new captain with original ship, looks to capture that sloop. Then has crew massacred 'cause they have the axes/muskets upgrade. I can almost see the shocked faces. --- and bug report flood. LOLOL

LOLOL We will make sure it is ... limited to higher difficulties, appears with higher level Captains only and turns on after 10,000 turns.

No need to go to such extremes. It makes sense that who you may encounter has upgraded their ship. Merchants especially will upgrade hold capacity, while making minimal offensive upgrades. An option is to scale the effective upgrades with difficulty level, or enemy captain level. i.e. maybe one or two upgrades on normal or challenging and increasing as the difficulty increases. And/or you encounter an enemy captain that is 5, 10, or more levels higher than you, she/he may have more upgrades installed. Just don't want the unpredictability erased on the lower difficulties. Hope this makes sense.

I think a message 'as you look at the craft you see that its crew are sailors, equipped much the same as you are' vs 'have a large number of Marines prepared to board your craft' vs 'are a frightening sight with a mixed array of captured armaments all present' would go a long way towards not having such bug reports.

Expanding upon what grävling has outlined. Is it possible that your Intelligence could affect your perception of the vessels that you encounter. The higher your Intelligence the more accurate your evaluation of the vessels you encounter?

I don't think that it takes much intelligence to judge how ready a crew is to fight you -- just a good spyglass. We could have those for sale in the game, though, of various quality, and that would be fun. Where intelligence would be more useful is in figuring out whether a ship is flying under false colours, has a forged Letter of Marque, or is out and out lying to you when it signals that it is 'carrying dispatches' and cannot stop. Deception on the high seas. Gosh I could have a lot of fun with that.

How skilled he is would be impossible to figure out, but physical attributes could be observed by seeing enemy actions and reactions during combat, which in turn could give an idea of skills (200% strength for example would probably mean he's a pretty good fencer)
