I am an Officer of Ruesland.
I took orders to travel to Ruesland (the town) and capture somebody at the docks there.
The person there was flying the flag of Ruesland.
I figured that he was 'sailing under false colours' -- the dirty Pirate -- and if I wasn't under orders to capture him I would just sink his ship.
Battle went great, he is all captured up now.
And my military superiors are all seriously upset with me for firing on a ship flying Ruesland colours. :-(
Sigh.
I was supposed to let him go, because of the flag he was showing? Or have I just captured the wrong ship and I was supposed to wait for another one to come along that was my real target, or ....
what exactly did I do wrong here?

I have been trying to eliminate this -- the "false flag" code is being stripped out.
So -- summary: You didn't do anything wrong. The game did.
That ship was erroneously flying the colors of Ruesland.
I will keep trying to patch this up, it isn't intentional.

And I really think at the end, on the victory screen ... maybe here is an idea:
Add a button call "Serve Justice" that you tap to go to the Complete Contract screen?

If that eliminates conflicts with whoever issued the contract, I think it works. I think that sometimes the person you are contracted to get will actually be working for another faction and they may be a little upset about it. That will add to the whole intrigue factor. And be a major oops when you find out that doing a contract for a different faction then your primary faction costs you. May have to think a bit harder about what you are doing as the people offering the contract may not give you all the info you want.

Maybe something to look at. Not everyone a government wants to 'talk to' will be a ship captain. Maybe an option to take your target off the ship and let the ship go. Thus minimizing any negative consequences.
Just a thought.

Btw, isn't having a Letter of Marque for the target ship's faction (even if it's the same as the commission issuer) supposed to protect you from Rep loss?
Or I've misunderstood its function?

I'd like to be able to 'serve justice' and also take the ship of the person I captured.
Ditto for 'leave nobody alive' missions -- I'll be sure to execute everybody, but can I not keep that excellent ship?

I thought I letter of marque lets you go after the enemies of the issuing faction without being branded a pirate. It makes such actions legal. And I shouldn't need a letter of marque from faction X if I am already an Officer in its Navy. Historically, having a LoM -- if it was respected, and it wasn't always -- protected your crew from being pressed by the issuing body's Navy, which was reason enough to get LoM with more than one faction.

You just have to take his ship and then burn yours! I don't know if it's intentional, but it's something you could do in ST and I've tried it once in AoP already. If you're supposed to execute and burn you can still press the "Take Ship" button. After that the "Burn" button should still be bolded and if you tap it you will still successfully complete the contract. So as long as you don't have any extreme nostalgia for your old ship and don't mind watching it go up in flames you're good to go.

It functions when there are Reprisals to be made. Unlike the ST "always on" style Letter, the AoP Letters of Marque are connected to Conflicts.

Absolutely. And it will have this benefit in town protecting you from Crew loss while using the Tavern! I think that will be a fun side effect. Rank will have it as well, but with other drawbacks and so on.

Regarding (com) missions ...
I will be working to add a button that completes the contract correctly.
You'll be able to tap that, clear up the contract ... and then carry on with your ship victory as normal.
