This seems to be a hold-out from Star Traders. The view from the wheel, where you steer the ship has always been rather poor. What you have instead is a view from the Foretop or the Maintop en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_%28sailing_ship%29, or possibly the Crowsnest if your ship has one.
