As a practical matter, what does buying increased ranks get me? More interesting fights? Better ability to sail? Nothing, it is just something to put on your captain's gravestone?

Maybe I'm wrong but I'd thought that increased rank was linked to some of the ship upgrades that you can purchase. I recall one of them me not being
able to purchase as I was not of sufficient rank. I think that it was one of the combat upgrades.

- Leadership of Expeditions
The other wise to this work is the "ranks" in trade guilds. These will be different.
They're acting like stock certificates -- you'll be able to buy AND sell them.

And there's also what rank did in ST. AoP ranks works like reputation but at a much greater rate: better prices, increased commision pay, easier port landings, better ships at stardocks, more recruits willing to work for captain at taverns etc. And a base rank (rank 1) is required for certain upgrades, bonuses for conflicts and others.
*these are educated guesses but knowing Cory I'm pretty sure that these guesses are accurate

Rank increases commission pay but doesn't help with landing, ships or better prices. |
