'Sell everything that you can aside from ship's rations, and powder & shot'.
Maybe 'Sell everything except for ship's rations, P&S, Maps and Journals' would be better, I still don't really know what having those 2 in your ship do.

I think it would not be practical because different people will have different things they want to keep by default. - some people will also want to keep their luxury rations and rum - others will want to keep gold for kraken hunting - merchant may not want to keep S&P Unless the Sell All Except... button is customizable. That would be awesome.

That would be awesome. The last would be awesome indeed. But even if people who want to save certain things cannot use the feature, people who are playing Pirates and Privateers who are looking for quick turn around and a way to empty their holds so they can fill them with more loot from ships would find some form of a 'sell everything' button useful. The people who cannot use it will be no worse off than they are now, but the people who find selling tedious will have a more streamlined game. Or here is an idea: Make port. Go to the docks. Press 'sell everything' here comes a popup with a list of everything in your hold, beside it is a checkbox. ship's rations and powder and shot come with the checkbox off. everything else comes with the checkbox on. If there is something on the list that you do not want to sell -- or if you want to sell all the ships rations and the shot for some reason, you can adjust the checkbox. Then one click sells the lot.

An argument no on will win.
I've had probably 100 proposals for this feature in ST, none of them prioritize the same way.

An argument no on will win. I've had probably 100 proposals for this feature in ST, none of them prioritize the same way. Then give us checkboxes. I'd like that for ships battles as well. see: Make port. Go to the docks. Press 'sell everything' here comes a popup with a list of everything in your hold, beside each item is a checkbox. I don't really care what start off as default checked on or default checked off. Adjust checkboxes as you like. Then one click sells all you have checked. Any arrangement of checkboxes would be preferable to what we have now, even one that consistently only marked for sale the things I wanted to keep and marked to keep what I wanted to sell. That's how unhappy I am with a) needing to use the slider, which I find unpleasant, so anything that bypasses that mechanism is great with me, and having to sell goods one screen at a time. Selling goods this way is really, really tedious.

Yeah I gotta go with Gravling on that one. I HATE the slidey thing! It's ok if you want all or none or something but to pick "12" is enough to make you want to walk the plank! Arggg! : )

Arggg! : ) Sadly that control is the recommended one provided for numerical selections. I really doubt we've got the money to eliminate it but I am following this thread and trying to think of ways to improve. I find the AoP landscape slider very easy to use for specific numbers but then I've been trained by ST

The problem is that the common use cases are 'sell everything that I have of X' and 'buy as much X as can fit in my hold'. When I have a hold full of 2 goods of this and 3 goods of that after raiding I don't want to have to go make 6 separate stops in the market. I want to go to a wholesaler and say 'take the lot'. I am a whole lot happer to make numerical selections with this clock widget that come with my Samsung Phone. Tapping on the plus sign makes the number bigger. As does holding it down. Tapping on the minus sign makes the number smaller. As does holding it down. When I design such things, I put the - on the top and the + on the bottom. For AoP modify it so that it also has a 'None' button on the top and 'All I can get' on the bottom and I think we would be happier. Attachments:

This seems like a rational choice.

That control, TimePicker, is derived from NumberPicker which is what we would use but it wasn't available for general purpose use until after our minimum supported OS release.
We've stayed with Google's advice on this one thus far, based mostly on market pressure and device metrics.
The widget on the Sumsung phone is nice but not portable, Android OS standard or available in 2.3.1 ... I get what you're saying but there are technical challenges.

What is your minimum supported OS release now? And my phone is running 2.2 and (obviously) has the widget.

It probably is a Samsung widget. The real question is which supported os forbids making one out of 2 buttons and a text box.

www.quietlycoding.com/?p=5so the Google silly bastards want increment on top and decrement on bottom, not as a choice but a mandate. Ok, then the extra top button becomes: All I can get and the bottom one becomes: None
