Right now the only random events I see are "Sailing accident" and "Sailing accident has damaged the sails". (ironically, sails are damaged in both instances... bug?)
Would be nice if there were more variety, even if it's only in the text description, like: - crew were entangled in the ropes and strangled to death - crew manning the foretop fell asleep and dropped to their death - crew die of dysentery - sails torn by gusts of strong winds - narrowly avoided a sailing accident - the crew were shaken up by (some sighting or event) but have recovered

Right. Just have to be careful because encounter systems can be difficult to build for wider acceptances.
In your question above, no, not a bug. Great question, but no.

I was going to suggest some alternate random events. But then thought it would make the games encounter system seem a little too much of a copy and past from CK. I agree though, it would add a little variety and spice to the mix if we got something other than sailing accident.
Grazed a reef for example.

Struck by Lightning, damaging the mast, and possibly setting the ship on fire. God help you if you were carrying lots of powder when this happens.

Added some more flavor text for the next release.

The new flavour texts are very nice, but
a) we call them 'lines' not 'ropes' and b) you cannot strangle in them by accident. You can get tangled in them, and therefore fall to your death, and you can be crushed by them in certain circumstances, but they are, in general, too thick to be of much use for strangling. and c) it makes our crews seem very, very, very accident prone. The Landsmen were accident prone -- though most accidents were not fatal -- but disease, and not accident was what claimed most sailors lives. By a large margin.
Or course we haven't implemented disease yet, as far as I can tell.

Aye, on land, they call it scarlet fever, but at sea we call it 'the gravling,' by ancient tradition! Argh!

Thanks for the clairifications, grävling ! I was just brainstorming ideas, but I enjoy learning from your tidbits of wisdom. Maybe have rare, random events where crew can lose morale? - due to scurvy - due to fights - due to gambling debts

Crushed by loose cannon. Dragged overboard by sea monster. Killed by petty squabble on board. Keelhaulled! Accidental discharge of musket while loading.
