Crushed by loose cannon. Dragged overboard by sea monster. Killed by petty squabble on board. Keelhaulled! Accidental discharge of musket while loading. These sound good, though the captain has to order Keelhauling -- like being made to walk the plank it is not something that can happen by accident. Some times when it got really hot, the captain would lower some canvas into the sea. The crew, who couldn't swim for the most part, would splash around in it. Sometimes they got eaten by sharks. Died from injuries sustained after a flogging. Died from infection. Died from tetanus.
