I find it quite annoying that the buttons during combat keep changing location. Especially during the transition from close range to medium range where the Retreat button becomes Advance!! Would you consider just keeping all buttons showing all the time, and just grey out the ones that are not applicable? Or give each button it's permanent, dedicated spot on the screen, but hide it when the operation is not available.

I've tried it both ways and really find that one the average device the current system is best.
maybe in the future we'll add an option, but it was something I spent several days experimenting with.
We didn't arrive at the current configuration by accident -- careful planning.

We didn't arrive at the current configuration by accident -- careful planning. It badly violates some pretty well established principles of UI design, where people are known to stop reading buttons and just expect the ones in the appropriate places to do the appropriate things. And it is hell on slow phones, where you hit retreat, nothing happens, you think that you haven't pressed it, you press it again -- and the phone reads both clicks. You've retreated, but then suddenly advanced, and you get shot to pieces. Just died this way.

I think you should just code everything for optimum use on the Note II !!!

Could easily be a debate -- the Android UX guidelines and the training Google gives out for developers definitely raise some eyebrows but I don't have to look much father than market share to make my call. We're making best case use of the space and we're adopting a re-flow on change approach from Fragments UX. I will keep looking at it of course -- nothing is ever finished or final around here. Google promised that you would all have upgraded your slow phones to modern (or at least, 1 generation back) by now but it doesn't seem like you did

My phone _was_ the hottest kid on the block in June 2010. If I have to buy a new phone every year, where will I get the money to buy games?

And, UI decisions that get you killed in a game have prioritised the wrong thing. There is no benefit that will ever stack up at all vs 'not getting killed because I pressed the button twice -- or too long'.

It's all a plot, I say! Having failed to solve 'button mashing' Cory is slowly accustomizing us to randomly moving buttons.
Coming soon: search search search search search search search search 'All goods dumped overboard!' 'All characters deleted, make another?'

Hmm, just an idea out of the blue... maybe an alternative scheme would be to remove the Left Button Panel altogether, and place the action buttons at fixed locations directly on/around the display screen? Tried that one already.
