This challenge is pretty crazy. I find myself just dreading hitting that "Contract" button. I know I have to do it, but where is it going to send me? "Oh look a third assasination contract again Cadar in a row, super! I just paid$11,000 for a pardon with them, so I can start digging myself back into the hole and forget ever getting a trade permit with them again."
So far I'm mostly only taking contracts at the Spice Hall if I can help it. Rep with everyone is 0 to 30 except for Rychart which is -120-something, due to a shortage trade during an embargo.

Okay which of you sprayed my hull with alien phermones? I've run into more aliens in the last 2 days than I have in my entire ST career: 4 aliens excluding any passing space hulks.

Nope. No upgrades what-so-ever. At least it happens early in the game thus allowing restarts.

Haven't unlocked the spy either ... I'm using a tried and tested pirate who starts with 6 pilot, 6 tactics. On contract 4 after 2000 turns (hahaha) ... have a new captain going to push for rapid rank 3 (sigh).

I know exactly what you mean. I never really messed around too much with contracts previously, and this is a rough introduction. This run with Philip DeKargo has him being a captain (I liked the idea of cheap(er) pardons) and have been having decent luck so far keeping everyone relatively happy. So far, 15 contracts down without too much problems. I'm just getting ready to blow my cash upgrading the Tempus Fugit to it's fully upgraded state, hopefully I don't get myself killed!

I knew from the outset that managing reputation would be one of the biggest challenges in contract taking. It is "easy" to do lots of contracts, but if you aren't careful, you'll get to the point where a) You can't get easy contracts from anyone but independents b) You waste precious weeks trying to land in urban areas (getting constant encounters each time you attempt to land) c) You find yourself always short on cash because the costs of having to buy back ranks, trade permits, and fuel often outweighs the payment of the contract.

Just paid 14500 creds for a pardon, in compensation for a kill contract. Worst part is that the target faction had two alliances on at the time. I also forgot that switching ships means I would lose my Predator Tracking Array... Very good foresight on the cheaper pardons for Captain class, johndramey!

Lesleyr you're not out already are you? The last ST challenge I had a great captain going and got killed by a Narvidian Predator with a terror-type captain. It really sucked to be knocked out early. As for using a Captain captain that is a good idea. I always picture that character type as being a regular Han Solo, maybe not the most discriminating in business partners, always in-and-out of trouble, living for the moment. Feels very much like this challenge.

Not yet. 63 contracts down and only one fail left. The captain hit level 12 while I wasn't paying attention, leaving me stuck with her.

Well this run is going well, I had that early failure and non so far since then. Well, I just had a contract expire because I got greedy and took 3 contracts, 2 of which in the lower left quadrant and then the last one the lower right. Had to let that contract expire . I'm currently sitting at level 10 with 33 contracts complete and 2 failures. Still using the Tempus Fugit, totally kitted out and kicking a lot of ass at the moment. This challenge is a ton of fun, can't wait to see how everyone does!

I'm 22 contracts in (about to fail my first because it was a Cargo contract to a -ve faction). I'm at 47 years (turn 2444), but didn't start doing contracts until around turn 2,000. Oh, I'm level 14 and playing as a Piiiiiiiiirate
