I would've gone with putting minor ads in the free version, but this is good too. My only worry is that most games that have in-app purchases are free, so having in-app purchases in a paid game may upset some people. Perhaps you can make it so that you can't buy the unlock all until you obtain 10 awards (or something).
Again though, I don't care because I enjoy unlocking things from awards. Especially considering all the new awards are pretty easy compared to rapid rank III or Independent. I don't even think I can get those awards on Impossible!

Globally, 27% of applications in the Paid App space use in app purchases.
I know you have supported ads in the past -- the business just doesn't work that way.
I got a good giggle out of the idea we would force a user to unlock X things before they could buy.
I have my fingers crossed that the fans of Star Traders will support me and Andrew by buying the in app purchase.

Lord no... if I had seen ads in the free version I would never have bought Elite. It's not a mere objection that the ads exist, it's more that it changes the perception of what type of game (developer) I'm dealing with.
I do foresee a very useful point to having this IAP. Every time I (and quite possibly other forum members) switch phones or devices, we can make a small offering to the TB overlords and unlock the awards that we've already completed in previous iterations.

athios - we have promised never turn run commercial ads in any of our games. I couldn't play anymore, and that means I wouldn't want to make games anymore! Thanks for your support!

That remains a technique issue that we will view as a bug, not a justification for the IAP. If this BILLING permission thing is a success, SDCARD maybe the next step.

I didn't mean to suggest or insinuate that you are pulling a trick or anything. I just meant that for people who are hardcore enough to grab all awards the first time (before IAP was even talked about) probably love the game enough to not at all mind "investing" in TB to help make more/better games. Of course, the main point is also to avoid redoing all the unlocks for the n-th time. :-)

Cory Trese, I want IAP to be a success primarily because I am confident that you will be very cautious with your approach, and you have demonstrated integrity in everything else you do. I also want IAP to be a success so you do SDCARD

I also want IAP to be a success so you do SDCARD Andrew and I will do our best to be cautious and demonstrate integrity ... while programming devious AI routines to kill your Templars, vent your Hull and terminate your Runner friends. Oh, you can trust us with the SDCARD permission -- we promise we won't give our AI routines access to the SDCARD files to determine your weaknesses (to better kill your Templars, of course.)

I'd say okay, you can do that... But only as long as the AI doesn't want to fuck my Phone up because I killed too many AzTek-Squads! That would be pretty much insane.. Can you consider an AI like HAL sane at all? Hm??

Crimson - sorry for the wait, this is a particularly difficult one due to the differences in the IAP implementation in Amazon.
