does it make a difference where you pick up a contract from (palace, spice hall, military base etc.)? For instance if I take a contract from a military base does it make me better off with them? If yes then how does it affect the game?

If yes then how does it affect the game? It affects reputation the same way no matter where you get the contract, and as far as I can tell, the contracts are the same, except that the Military Base tends to have fewer (and you can't get access to those without being an officer, obviously--but you can't access Palace contracts if you have a very negative reputation, either).

Fixes in 3.6.3: - Improved Contract Payment for Palace - Improved Contract Payment for Military Base startradersrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=updates&action=display&thread=477#ixzz1IkFXBV9kSo it seems payment varies for different places, don't know how much and in what favor. I think that the Military Base contracts tend to offer more surveillance/blockade missions, Palace bounty hunter missions and Spice hall transport missions. AFAIK the pool of available missions for you is one for both the military base and palace. For example if you have 10 missions available, you can browse through 3 at military base and 7 at palace, or 10 at military base and none is left for the palace. The pool of missions for Spice Hall is separate. So even if you take up all missions from palace/military, you will still have the ones from Spice Hall (assuming there were some available to begin with). PS. You never know upfront how many mission you get to choose from.

This section from the draft of the revised Player's Guide may be helpful.
Contracts A Captain will accept a Contract to earn Credits and/or increase Reputation with that Faction. The Contract Offer Screen shows the Contract Type, destination, target, distance, pay, and time allowed. To Reject a Contract, tap the Reject Offer button or the Back button on your device.
Pay is immediately transferred to the Captain's account upon successful completion; a Captain does not need to return to a planet to claim the money.
On the Contract Status Screen, the Captain can review the details of active Contracts, Void any Contract, and set a Waypoint for a Contract's destination.
A Captain can only have five active Contracts at a time. If you have five active Contracts, you can still view available contracts, but the Accept Offer button will be grayed-out. To accept another Contract you must Complete or Void an active Contract.
If a Captain has multiple active Contracts, when a Contract is Completed (Success or Fail), a Waypoint will automatically be created to the next Contract on the list. (Which is NOT necessarily the closest Contract destination or next Contract to Expire.)
Places to Receive Contracts Military Base • all types available • the types offered varies based on Rank & Conflicts • best pay • largest ↑ in Rep • hardest to access • only available with rank
Palace • all types available • the types offered varies based on Rank & Edict • good ↑ in Rep • ↑ pay with Death Warrant (Bounty Hunter Contracts)
Spice Hall • all types except Blockade & Spy • lowest pay • smallest ↑ Rep • available even when Rep is low
Types of Contracts Deliver Message • non-combat, low risk, low pay • the simplest and least risky Contract type • Messages are small enough that they can be hidden on the Ship, so do not attract attention and are never discovered if the Ship is Searched or the Captain is Captured.
Deliver Package • non-combat, some risk • Packages, depending on the contents, can draw the attention of hostile Pirates, Warships and Bounty Hunters. • The likelihood that a package will NOT be discovered is increased by increasing the Captain's Stealth Skill. • Packages cannot completely hidden on the Ship, so they may be discovered if the Ship is Searched or Captured (by ANY Faction, even the issuing Faction). Package discovery results in immediate Contract Fail.
Deliver Passengers • riskiest of the non-combat Contract types • Passengers, depending on who they are, can attract the attention of hostile Warships and Bounty Hunters. • Passengers cannot be completely hidden on the Ship (disguised as Crew?), so they may be discovered if the Ship is Searched or Captured (by ANY Faction, even the issuing Faction). Passenger discovery results in immediate Contract Fail.
Assassination (Kill) • Must win Combat and Destroy Ship (during Combat or on the Combat Victory Screen). • May (no penalty for but not required) enslave Crew, take Cargo, and/or take Guns/Torpedoes. • May Take Ship (on the Combat Victory Screen), then Destroy your old Ship (now the enemy Captain's Ship). • Battle Stations (Encounter Screen) and Destroy (Combat Victory Screen) are bolded for the target Ship. Any player that wasn't sure if a Ship was the Target or a random encounter understands why this is an awesome new feature! (New in v3.5.7)
Bounty Hunter (Capture) • The most difficult Contract type. • Must win Combat WITHOUT Crew=0 or Hull=0. Must NOT destroy the ship on the Combat Victory Screen! • Boarding is not required. • May (no penalty for but not required) enslave Crew, take Cargo, take Guns/Torpedoes, and/or Take Ship. • Battle Stations (Encounter Screen) is bolded for the target Ship. Any player that hasn't been sure if a Ship was the Target or just another random encounter understands why this is an awesome new feature! (New in v3.5.7)
Blockade • Must hold Rank with the offering Faction (else not offered). The higher the rank, the higher the pay. • Must Orbit the target planet and repetitively execute a Blockade order. • The only Contract type that makes money while pursuing (the usual money extorted from the Blockaded ships) AND upon successful completion (the contract price).
Spy (Surveillance) • Must repetitively use the Surveillance command on the target Sector or Planet. • ↑ pay if you possess a Death Warrant with issuing faction • Makes money on top of the Contract price by creating Records.
Contract Destinations The Captain will be offered Contracts that cannot be successfully completed because the Contract Destination is Closed due to a Rumor (even if your Captain hasn't heard it). However, if your Captain's Reputation is too low to access the destination Star Dock (Rep < -10) or Palace (Rep < -30), the Price recognizes that the Contract is "inaccessible" and changes the destination to the Spice Hall. However, the pay offered by the Prince is 20% less, because he has to bribe someone into tricking the target to taking a trip to the Spice Hall when you land.
The wise Captain still considers the destination of the Contract before Accepting. She asks herself, "With my Reputation with that Faction and the Factor Sector I have to cross to get there, can I safely get to the planet's surface?"
Contracts For or Against "Independents" Independents are only rarely the actual target of a Contract – about 30%, depending on the Captain's Negotiation Skill (with minor effects of a few other Skills), Rep, rejection %, and Starting Difficulty. First Mate and Political Officer (Ship's Officers) can reduce this further. Your Political Officer will inform you of the true target, AFTER the Contract is complete (Success or Fail). The other Faction will always be Syndicate, if the Contract is from House, or a House, if the Contract is from Syndicate (or any Faction in an Alliance or Trade Alliance for anti-Merchant Contracts).
Similarly, Contracts offered on Independent planets are never (very rarely??) offered by Independents, but by a Faction. This is part of the challenge of accepting "Independent" sponsored Contracts. An Independent Spacer will tolerate the agents of a Faction, so long as they respect the Here and the Now, but would never hire one. What an Independent Captain needs done, she does herself. He will not stoop to buy the services of mercenaries or Faction soldiers. If you enter the Contract Status Screen, the true offering Faction is displayed.
Traitor Contracts These are Contracts you are offered against you're the same Faction as the Offering Faction (or another Faction or "Independent" that turns out to be the Offering Faction). The First Mate and Political Officer (Ship's Officers) will reduce the Traitor Contracts offered your Captain.

For example if you have 10 missions available, you can browse through 3 at military base and 7 at palace, or 10 at military base and none is left for the palace. I often check the Military Base until there are no more contracts on offer, and then still find new ones at the Palace.

MTKnife It never happened for me. I always have empy Palce when I've emptied military base first. Maybe it's because I've never invested in charisma skill, and amount of palace missions might be based on it? I can confirm that when I first visit the palace and see that missions are available but do not browse through them, then go to military base and take them all, go back to the palace and no missions are available. ehkamp the • ↑ pay if you possess a Death Warrant with issuing faction line is in Surveilance mission, which I think is not true and should be moved to Assasination mission and perhaps also Bounty hunter There is also a missing r in "the Price recognizes that"

jerry: Thanks for the feedback. The information was correct; the spelling was not. A Death Warrant DOES increase Spy Contract pay. For Capture & Destroy Contracts: * A DW increases the Rep gain with offering Faction and provides an additional XP. * I will check if a DW also increases Capture and Destroy pay.

Liz -- DW should increase pay for both capture and destroy when given at the palace or mil base
