I'm confused about how to go ashore anywhere other than at a port. The introductory info you get when you start a game indicates that this can be done using the wheel icon, but when I try that, all I see is a button that says "Search", which just appears to look for other ships. Am I missing something obvious?

You have to dock your ship next to specific map tiles. These areas are a single map-unit large, and can look like a little island, waterfall or a beach.

daniel - welcome to the forum! Sail next to a town, island, or beach, and tap the beach. Your captain should actually start right next to a town, so try your first touch on the screen to be to touch the port. Also, if you touch the ship's wheel while sitting next to a port, you should get two options: "Port" and "Search."

Yeah, I had the ports figured out, I just hadn't realized that there was anything special about those little one-tile islands. Thanks for the help! There have been a couple of times that I've run low on rations and it might have helped to stop and do a little foraging. I tried attacking ships just to get the rations they were carrying, but the yield from that strategy was a bit disappointing.
And speaking of that ... why is it that other ships you run into are always in perfect repair, but never seem to have enough rations to last more than a few weeks? That little imponderable aside, I'm enjoying the game and anticipating the upcoming enhancements I've been reading about on the forum!

daniel - great catch on this one! I have added ticket AOP-2096 to insure that enemy ships are always carrying a realistic amount of rations!

daniel - great catch on this one! I have added ticket AOP-2096 to insure that enemy ships are always carrying a realistic amount of rations! That's the third ticket we've opened, updated, and closed on that issue. It's about 50/50 on e-mail, too much/too few is an even split. The battle damage for hostile ships -- interesting question and honestly, one I have not heard before many times at all. Something to keep in mind, but after looking up the sub-tickets on 2096 I'm not sure I'm ready to agree about Rations. We've got to look into difficulty, game edition and probably do some checking on the device before too much more re-balancing. Nothing that is randomly generated 1000+ times per game is going to be perfect every time -- if it had to be, we wouldn't roll it.

I'm confused on picking up officers. I've been to a lot of castles and taverns, but never have I seen a place to get officers. Am I missing something?

mikelrysk - you must listen to the rumors in Taverns and Castles and they will help you locate the officers (3) that exist!
