I just started playing and I simply can't wrap my mind around all the various contradictory information out there in regards to wild zones. I'm trying to be an explorer and I just can't figure out all these numbers and what they mean.
For example looking just at the wild-zones-elite.pdf for a moment I don't understand what I'm looking at. In the "Explore" range there are highlighted sections for planets with 14 and 18's which might indicate you should be looking for planets with higher numbers but then if you look further it also highlights planets with 6 and 7's in the same score area indicating the exact opposite. Likewise in the harvest column you have the exact same seemingly contradictory information. Both high and low scores singled out.
If someone could explain to me, as simply as possible, which direction I should be looking at that would be great. As an explorer with clan Javat starting a new game should I be looking to explore the planets with the high numbers highlighted or the low numbers highlighted? What about caches? Is it better to store items in caches with higher scores or lower scores?
Any help would be appreciated.

Location of the planet is a big part of the equation.
Find a nearby planet.
Avoid planets with low (below 4) Explorer (yah guys?)
Avoid planets with Danger > Explorer.
As skill increases, risking higher Danger (and father away) planets with better Explorer ratings.

If you're Javat, go to the Javat Mining Camp and exploit the heck out of the Level 4 Danger. It's pretty much a cakewalk there until you start losing whole crews because the planet is empty. I'm still unsure as to why you get massive crew death on low danger planets instead of just coming up empty.
Also, make caches on planets with a high security rating. Javat Mining Camp isn't bad, but keep an ear to the ether if treasure hunter fleets are in the area. Personally, I like to store big stuff about 5 or 6 units negative on the Y axis (space-south?) of Cadar Pavonis. That place has a 10 security rating and it's somewhat central.

spiritofjon: I made these tables, so can address the highlighting. I've very sorry that it confused you. If you go to the bottom, the highlight criteria are listed. They are entirely based on what I found helpful when I was using these tables while playing. As the maximum Rating is higher in Elite than free, I used different criteria. I would also strongly encourage you to read the text displayed when landing in each Wilderness Zone. It tells you that you want Danger low and Cache high. For Explore & Harvest (the actions), the relationship between Danger and the Explore (or Harvest) rating is more important than the actual number. So highlighting in the these columns is not based on the actual number, but the difference between it and Danger. Criteria for Highlight for FreeHazard: < 6 Explore: Hazard – Explore < 3 Harvest: Hazard – Harvest < 3 Cache: > 7 Criteria for Highlight for EliteHazard: < 10 Explore: Hazard – Explore < 3 Harvest: Hazard – Harvest < 3 Cache: > 20 As I said, these were arbitrarily chosen based on what I found useful during game-play. Your experience may vary. I'd love to hear what other players think of them. (The ones in the Urban Zone & Ship tables too.)

A couple of good planets for you to start exploring on ... Planet | Loc | Haz | Exp | Ghactlli | (13,-9) | 6 | 7 | Ihaca-3 | (19,-9) | 6 | 7 | Kalflange Outpost | (-8,-3) | 6 | 6 | Tucanae-Javat Mining | (-2,-5) | 4 | 4 |
These are places where Explore => Hazard AND Hazard < 7 There are a number of planets where Hazards are relatively low, but in most cases, the Explore value is even lower so from a purely risk vs benefit basis, the above planets should give you best bang for buck. Of course, I've had 60 crew die on a level 3 planet before even with an Explorer skill of 19. The fact that I might have accidentally pushed them into that ancient trap to see if it was still armed is beside the point.
