I just tried this game out, and it looks wonderful! Used an Eastwinder to beat most of the targets in the game.
Still, I find that the combat system is somewhat... too simple? I've got away with 3 captains getting the ship they want, the rank they want and so on, and run away from my captors from the Federation of Kaihmer without even being caught once. It seems like trading broadsides at about mid-range works a lot better than using the ships as bombards, but I'd like to see a bit more depth in the game on this.
BTW, Does anybody have good strategies for battles on the high seas? Would love to see people fight it out differently.

I think this was on the second-highest difficulty. I've uninstalled it since to make way for ST RPG

Hey there prideofcadar, I actually have the opposite experience from you. I generally have a tough time getting my captains set up, and usually have to scramble to get them to a place where I feel comfortable on the seas with them. I've not been putting too much time into AoP since the alpha, but if I remember correctly the map is pretty forgoving. If you are feeling secure then maybe you should head out towards the Cape? That was always the area where I'd either run into a Kraken that would munch my ship to bits or start getting in over my head.

I use my Heavy Eastwinder's long gun to cause some damage. Then, I go in for the kill like a shark. I attack the masts (I have the cannon upgrade for it). If the battle goes on longer than expected, I board the enemy ship (boarding is a lot more efficient once you get whaleboats).

Electric - great strategy post and welcome to the forum! It is really important to get upgrades that cater to your combat style! Thank you. I liked the games Star Traders and Age of Pirates, so I thought it would be a good idea to join discussion and learns some things.
