So, I'm on a standard Search and Destroy mission for the De Valtos Syndicate. I'm a level 5 explorer, with piloting in the high teens. My ride is the Vae Victus, (12/12 hull, 10/10 armor) and I have a Military Officer on board.
I locate my target orbiting around some backwater Independent mud ball, and proceed to wipe his Dagger-class all over the ionosphere. After several rounds of combat, he's down to 1 hull, no armor, and 5 crew. He's barely scratched my ship, and my hull and armor are untouched. I decide that it's time to end this particular conflict, and hit the board button. Suddenly...
Bam. Hull breach. *sigh*
This isn't the first time I've been one-shotted by a pirate, and I'm certain it won't be the last. What's weird is that the armor was never touched, and the turn activity display at the bottom read:
"Vae Victus boards the Dagger-class for 10 points of damage. The Dagger-class fires at the Vae Victus and misses, for 0 points of damage." (that's not exact, but the best I could remember)
I wish I could have taken a screen shot, but that functionality does not work properly on my table.
What the heck happened here? Any theories?

Hey Hotpoo, What build are you playing on? From 3.6.5 onwards, the ships log records the details of your death.
It could be because your pirate scum target decided to ram you as you were boarding him, but my gut feel is that this is one of those times where the game hiccuped. I've had similar situations where I have had a perfectly good ship (even 22 hull in one case) and in one hit out of nowhere, I get kersplatted all over the galaxy. This hasn't happened for a few weeks though so I thought either I was getting luckier, or the bug had been fixed.

I'm playing v3.6.8.
I'm not seeing any details on the death in the ship's log or score summary, unfortunately. It details injuries received in other battles, officer purchases, pardons, and injuries received while sacrificing away teams to the elder gods... I mean, exploring.

Any chance you breached his hull while you were on his ship?
Where does the boarding action happen?
I'd love to see a separate screen for combat once you board. Really, once you board, the two ships ought to be locked together in a death grapple.

If I breached his hull, it never showed up on the status screen (was still @1 when I got popped).
It does make me wonder if I damaged myself by the act of boarding. The game reported that I did 10 damage to the Dagger, but I don't believe that was reflected anywhere (not that I could see, anyway).

YES YES YES!!! Id love to see captain vs captain issue dealt with seperately than ship to ship. I dunno how many times my crew or ship is losing and then somehow my captain wins a duel (or loses one) on the higher difficulties I pretty much RELY on winning a duel. Run after turn 1 = lose too often. My best chance for success (using my l1 or l2 method) wins much more consistantly by killing my opponent captain than by any other method.

I stay away from boarding. I'll shoot out the engines and board when I'm good and ready.

That's the strategy I've started to take as well. I'm currently rolling around the quadrant in a Fallen Cruiser, and nothing gets close enough to me to scratch the paint... let alone actually climb inside.

How is the Fallen Cruiser? It looked a little slow for my tastes.

This sounds like RAM DEATH.
Ram is a desperate act. It can be devastating.
I have added a review of the damage equations to the list.

Fallen Cruiser is hand designed by Andrew for use by cheater pants Cadar Military Officers.

That's intriguing Cory. (that Andrew hand-built it) That implies that I must be missing something about it as, in the past, I've tended to dismiss it myself.
(and as someone who's high on the Pilot/Stealth-torp Tactical-Style Charts I feel like I should grok his intent at least enough to appreciate the ship, but it just doesn't seem to compare to the others I see around the same time for engines/sails, which are my primary determinant for desireability after ensuring sanity on cargo/crew)
-abs (it doesn't help that I'm an "Andy" myself, and I'm not used to being out of sync with the rest of us)

I like the FC. It looks a lot slower than it is. Nothing has touched my since I bought it. Literally. I've actually been picking fights with pirates lately (currently an explorer), and I'm quite impressed. Not the best ship out there, but worlds better than my Longbow.
Unfortunately, the hull is almost double my current pilot skill (working on that). This means I have to stand up in the seat to see over the dashboard, and I keep "accidentally" brushing up against Cadar cruisers when I try to parallel park in the star dock.

If ramming is so awesome, you need better text when it happens.
"Oh Great and Glorious Headbands! Those hatcrappers are ramming us!"
"First Mate, bring us to ramming speed. Brace your epaulets and prepare the battle mustaches for boarding action!"
Also, ramming ought to lock you at boarded range if it works.

Yesterday I had a rather promising impossible-level game end abruptly thanks to the all-powerful ram. At this stage I'd be happy to see it removed from the game altogether. "Oh Great and Glorious Headbands! Those hatcrappers are ramming us!" "First Mate, bring us to ramming speed. Brace your epaulets and prepare the battle mustaches for boarding action!" Moustaches waxed and ready. Collar starch on standby.
