Hi all, I was recommended this game but I'm having real trouble getting started. I've been following the advice in this safe start for new captains thread startradersrpg.proboards.com/thread/3968/safe-start-new-captains. Having re-started a few times now I really could do with help getting into the game. I've followed the advice and started as a Clan Javet Explorer. I've gone to Tucanae-Javat Mining having checked for rumours before leaving the starting planet and also on arrival at Tucanae-Javet Mining. Seeing none about trade embargoes I though all was well and having a trade permit for Clan Javet happily went exploring and got my first batch of resources including Artifacts, Weapons and Electronics. I went back to the surface and checked for rumours. The button wasn't there in either the spice hall or palace so assumed there were none. Tried to sell my cargo and apparently I've broken the trade embargo with Syndicate Rychart and now I'm at -14 reputation. This has happened 3 times now and I still can't figure out what specifically I'm doing wrong since I can't find a notice about a Trade Embargo. I've even tried going to a Rychart planet to trade but then lost my trade permit with Clan Javet.
I'm just on the free version on iOS.
What am I doing wrong?

NewbieExplorer - welcome to the forum! The Trade Embargo is a Faction Conflict. Go into Status > Cargo > Conflicts and check there to be sure you are not going to anger any Faction you are worried about. Also, getting a Political Officer or a Merchant Officer could help with this.

I play the Android version, so I'm not privy to how the iOS version plays exactly. However, I'll detail the way it works on our system, and hopefully you'll have an equivalent.
When a Faction Conflict occurs, it is initiated randomly at the start of each turn. When this happens, a little pop-up window detailing what type of conflict has begun, and between which factions.
Listening to rumors at the Palace and Spice Halls has nothing to do with Faction Conflicts. Rumors are treated completely differently, and only apply to the location the rumor is said to be happening at; a surplus of metal on Xeen Prime, or a shortage of Luxury Goods on Ggett II, for example.
The aforementioned pop-up windows, or toasts, should have an checkbox in the options menu to make them last longer on-screen. I believe all the various toast types have this: morale notices from the First Mate, damages to your ship's solar sails from radiation storms in deep space, low water-fuel indications, etc.
As Fallen said, going to your Status menu, tapping on the Cargo tab on the top-right, and then selecting the Conflicts tab in the middle will show you any alliances, wars, or embargoes currently in effect in the quadrant. If you need further explanation on any of the Conflict types, just let us know.
Once last bit of advice. -11 isn't bad at all with reputation. You can recover that very quickly by picking up a couple contracts at that faction's spice hall(I believe spice halls never close down to players, regardless of how far in the negative your rep gets), and if you still have access to the Exchange of that faction, and try selling some Records to them. Just be careful they aren't in the middle of a Spy War with another faction you're trying to be friendly with, or a Trade Embargo...or both.
Oh! I don't know if it's been implemented into the iOS version(I'm going to assume it is), but having Records in your ship's hold will allow more successful excavations as an Explorer captain. You'll also want to be on the lookout for a Scout officer; you can learn about officers via the Rumor system.
I hope this all helps, and isn't a complete overload of info. Welcome to the community!

Just asking this, but is our conflict computer in our fuel tank or something? Seems silly that our conflicts are accessed via cargo. Wouldn't it be better in Status?

Thank you so much guys. That's brilliant. I do indeed have a trade embargo listed in the conflicts. Thanks also for the tip about the notify button in the options. Sometimes notifications have been so brief I've hardly had time to read them before they're gone. I'll have another go and hopefully I'll get a bit further before I get stuck again!

Sent from my MB855 using proboards No, because every captain needs a hidey-hole, so he can watch his YouTube videos of silly cats and skateboarders breaking things. It just so happens that the cargo hold is the greatest place for wifi reception on his intergalactic smartphone. I mean, just imagine the roaming charges to his bill otherwise!

We have often discussed a re-organization of this set of menus to be "Captain / Ship / Quadrant" as the 3 top level items. Haven't gotten there yet!
