I've noticed you only have to stay in your original starting ship. Doesn't have to be the vae victus.

Yeah ... it's a known anomaly ... so long as your starting ship doesn't change, you get a shot at the award. On more difficult levels it tends to be rephrased to ... so long as your starting ship doesn't change, you get shot or they come aboard.

Award is lost the moment you bought a ship I think. I tried it the other day, bought a ship but didn't jump over, yet I still didn't make the award.

The award logic checks that you have exceeded the rank required AND number of ships owned = 1 (you can find the number of ships owned in your score screen under "In Victory" details).
NOTE, it is important that you claim the award BEFORE you buy a ship. For example, if you are going for Hard Core Captain you need to be level 5 with starting ship. If you do really well and get to level 7 with the starting ship, then you have met the criteria for the award, BUT you also need to go into the Hall of Records and "Record Exploits" BEFORE you go and buy/commandeer another ship.
If you go buy a new ship on level 7, then go try and claim the award, it will show that you don't have it.
It's the same for the "Quick Contracts" awards. If you get 5 perfect contracts (no fail/no expire), but before you go claim the award, you fail the next contract, then you don't get the award.
