I've noticed that if you hull a pirate ship in the same round it reduces your ship's engines to zero, you still get looted by force and demoralised.
I presume this is a bug, since the dead crew of a ship is unlikely to loot anything.

It would probably be Thulun pirates because they are too dogmatic to realize they should be dead. Alternatively, Steel Song are sneaky and I wouldn't put it past them to put on space suits, hull their own ship and then wait to come aboard yours.
In all other instances, yeah, it's kind of a bug but perhaps an "as-designed" type of bug. It probably stems back to the fact that on all levels but Basic and Normal, a hull breach really only means one thing. You become past-tense.
As such, game logic = 1) You shoot, enemy shoots ...
2) Check your hull. Options: a) Breach = Dead (or Looted) b) No Breach = go to 3 3) Check enemy hull. Options: a) Breach = You go on your merry way b) No Breach = go to 1
So if you had simultaneous hull breaches, then your hull condition gets checked by the game logic before the enemy's hull. In Challenging and above, this is fine because .. you're dead.

I mean when the enemy ship's hull is breached, but yours is only without engines. You get looted by the destroyed ship anyway.

Okay that sucks. That'll definitely be a hiccup in terms of the process flow. Cory will have to do some of his magic tinkering to sort that out.

True about Thulun spacers, though.

LOL. This is a bug and a silly one at that. I check for player defeat first. How's that for ST RPG style?
