So you have a list of cool talents and abilities. During combat, you rely on the quick buttons (top, middle, bottom), which are great. I treat those buttons as your short-cut keys to the particular actions.
However, if you want to use a different talent (eg the Thief's Aimed Shot 1), you have to select that talent, move it up to one of your slots, exit the Talent menu, then select the new shortcut.
I would like it that if you short-pressed the talent option (Aimed Shot 1), it would activate it. If you Long-pressed the option, you can shift it into one of your slots. (EDIT - I just found that if you double-click on an option in the talent menu, it activates it, so it's available if you remember to double-click)
Regarding the slots, would it not be better to treat them like you do equipping gear? If you long-press on your top/middle/bottom icon, it should take you to a "select a talent for this slot"

Actually I believe you can just double tap any talent in your list and have it bump you back to the screen and allow it's use, I've been doing that with the outlander's Savage Strike (or is it sweep?) because it's good for when I want to get that final hit in on something.

Hopefully the double-tap resolves your issue. We have also kicked around making the talents hud list like the ST menu ... it grows as it can to fix your screen size and puts more in if possible.
