Is it possible to avoid reputation loss with trading companies when you encounter their military ships? Can you only pass by without penalty if you are a defenceless trader? Choosing Avoid is less trouble than being searched but it is an admission of guilt so you lose reputation.
I refuse to sail without shot and powder so I lose reputation every time. Especially with Octopon, but that's more because all of their ships are empty burned hulks after I pass by... :-)

For nation states you can go to a castle/palace and buy a permit, after which you can pass freely carrying shot and powder. There don't appear to be any places where you can buy similar permits for the trading conpanies - all the towns have only taverns shipyards and trading halls but no palace.

This is nothing to do with rep loss, but it does have something to do with trading companies... Is there a way to JOIN the trading companies?

Unfortunately, no... I've always wanted to though. Tell everyone you know and meet to play this game, buy the elite version, and start the cash flowing on it... The only way they can expand is if the games start producing for them. My people are all sick of hearing about TB games, so I can't keep pushing them anymore  |
