What governs your gaining reputation with the pirate groups (pirates, corsairs, bucaneers)?
I initially lost a small amount of reputaion defending myself against them. Then I continued playing and got an upgraded War Galleon that reduced much of the Federation of Kaihmer fleet to driftwood (initially there was a conflict with my Ruesland navy, but now they just don't seem to like me).
Recently I checked and I have about +600 rep with all of them, despite the fact that if I see any of their ships I send them to feed the fish.

I don't think so... I'm fighting Kaihmer and Octopon ships only so I would not expect that much of a build up. Plus I should lose rep every time I sink their own ships.
Do they all give rep for general acts of piracy?

You gain reputation for defeating the kraken, not sure how much but it's something like 50 with each faction. So if you sink a few kraken ships you'll end up with positive rep with everyone.

I thi nk its a lot more than 50. I HATE THAT ARCADIAN COMPANY!!! AARGG!!! but if I destroy one kragen sumbag ship... I lose two negative ranks with them. I love being seen as a legendary pirate lord... but defeating the kragen takes the fun out... I avoid it just because of that... now where's that winch with me ale!!! |

It does seem important to have reputation with pirate groups, because as a merchant, they like to come after me and steal my goods. The corsairs are especially annoying, but I have never been attacked by the actual "pirates" faction. I sure hope there is a way to gain reputation with them, that sure would be a load off my keel.

I have. Once. Corsairs tend to leave me alone (probably because I usually play as them, if not I'm a buccaneer smuggler). Buccaneers are a worse threat. |
