I had become accustomed to a Challenging or even Demanding quadrant, so this time I decided to make life Hard. Harder than I had planned, it turns out. I began service for House Thulun as a bounty hunter in a trusty Fidei Defensor, not much to look at but she can carry a good load of water-fuel. My first series of contracts avoided any combat and went suspiciously well, with several deliveries to close destinations. All my training went straight into piloting skills.
On my way back I lost a few solar sails to storms, and fuel became tight. Thankfully I only had another couple of sectors to pass until home. Then out of nowhere arrived a Pirate Crossbow with superior piloting skills and it became clear this was not going to go well as I was unable to flee. I was quickly boarded. I fought them off after a long and tense battle that left my ship in near ruin. With no alternatives left I took their ship and cargo and left them in the hulk of my old vessel.
Patching up cost most of my cash and I immediately began to miss the large hold of my old departed ship. Two contracts became tough gambles with strictly limited range. Matters rapidly became worse after a network of Trade Embargoes left me with no choice but to trade on and face the consequences. The Cadar Syndicate became rather upset with my activities and branded me a Terrorist.
My next mission ended in disaster in the shape of an alien vessel intercepting my return after sustaining light damage from pirates. A hundred unspeakable beings bore down on me with total disregard for my attempts at manoevering. I frantically ordered my crew to retreat but to no avail, and alien boarding parties tore through my crew. At last I holed up with 12 other crew and made a decision to change tactics. We faced 86 alien beings by my last count.
"No speeches lads. It's the alien. Do or die." We charged across and boarded their ship, fighting with the desparation of the already dead. We slaughtered them all after two incredibly bloody battles. I still do not know how.
I recieved an impressive pile of cash for the hulk of the alien vessel, and limped back to the Thulun home world with only one other man left alive. Repairs left me poorer than before starting the mission, but I set out with a renewed sense of optimism on a medium range delivery.
I passed through a radiation storm with no warning andno fewer than six other solar storms and vacuum leaks. With no nearby planets the crew rapidly fell to muitiny and I only just survived. Then a pirate vessel arrived upon the scene and destroyed what was left. So it ended.
It's a cold heartless quadrant out there.
