How about the ability to influence the space controlled by factions.

This is something that has been requested since the very first days of the game's release. It's unfortunately not possible with the limitations of the game engine (along with being able to tow a captured ship behind your own to keep). We're all patiently waiting for ST 2 to be released ... of course that won't happen for a long while yet, but we live in hope all the same

I figured, didn't know if it had been suggested yet.

There's very little that hasn't been requested yet. Certain people around here have even requested the removal of Steel Song from the quadrant, but then also realize that they'd have nothing worthwhile left to launch torps at.

I don't use torps, to I like having things to take from the enemy, I gun their engines. Then enslave, loot, and salvage since I can't just add the ship to my fleet

When taking the ship of an enemy (or recovering one of their own) a captain would usually put together a skeleton crew along with some extra repair people to help get her underway towards a friendly port for refit. In port work could be handled by your own people or from port facilities paid for out of pocket or by contract (in the case of government or corporate interests, usually privateer) I don't know about the mechanics of the game, but mathematically it seems like a straight forward thing to capture and take a ship as a prize if you're allowed to possess multiple hulls.
