Did the tutorial then started sandbox on easy. Almost every encounter is against multiple opponents who are way stronger than I am and I end up d-e-a-d. I keep the heat down and have upgraded weapons and armor. So what gives.

When you are kill and get back to the game (as you play one easy you should go back in a zone control by the faction that had killed you) you are still wounded so the first thing you should do is to get heal. In a fight, equipment is not the only thing that can get you surviving, you also want better stats (raise your AP by raising dex/int/per and raise athletics and stealth to be able to escape esealy or combat skill and brawling to kill and avoid getting killed) and some runner to help you getting your opponents down quickly. And most of all : avoid being in corp zones at first and stick to gang land until your stats and equipment is sufficient to survive corp squad. Hope it will help

But when you start in the sandbox, you should be getting single ganger enemies. So if you are seeing multiples, my guess is that you are not in ganger territory ...

Thx for the help. Followed advice and now the game is fun to play. The corp zones were doing me in, and I was spreading my xp too thin.

Be sure to check target alignment before accepting missions in areas you're used to. Nothing teaches you that faster than threatening a kh trooper in Los V territory and having a horde of kh troops appear for a fight in los v territory. O.o
