I read about this on AoP, and was considering asking about it for ST.
Is there a way to set autopilot to take the shortest actual distance instead of randomly changing paths, as I get damage and encounters either way.

I think that currently the autopilot is set to choose path with the most green squares. This way you take the path that consume less water-fuel. I may be.wrong on that though since I'm not a great specialist of ST

I have found that isn't always the case. There are several times when just going straight through instead of around a sector cost me more water/fuel than helped. A good example is sometimes instead of going straight, the ship makes a turn to avoid a green square, costing me an extra move just to avoid it. just wondering if I could turn it off and just go straight there.

I don't know if there is an option to turn that off. As a workaround, you can click the next point YOU want to go and still see the arrow for the direction of your contract (I use that a lot before realizing that there were an autopilot ). Of course this technique doesn't work when you select a planet directly from your navigator.

I know the click on single step method, you can even move a couple of spaces at a time. I just would like to go there without repeated interaction As of right now I use the individual click method.

No auto pilot system is going to be 100% correct, but the system that calculates paths looks at your ship, fuel economy and the map path to optimize a route. Since deep space navigation is dangerous, sometimes random and full of dangers and accidents the end result is oftentimes different than the path finding system hoped. In the case you mention, at the start of the path your fuel econ for 2 greens was less than 1 red so the game made the logical call. In the current game engine, there is no way to turn off this feature.

Just a suggestion I know there isn't, and was wanting to bring up the possibility.

It's funny that if you move from Gamma Javat-II -> Cadar Pavonis, it usually takes the route with more green squares close to De Valtos Prime. But it you go Cadar Pavonis -> Gamma Javat-II, the autopilot just says "meh" and cuts through all the red squares possible.
Always found it funny.

Sometimes it avoids certain green squares as well as certain planets. Its just Im being lazy, and don't want to have to do short jumps
